As AI continues to automate the design industry’s most routine tasks, the role of the human-led design studio is shifting. In this opinion piece, Simon Manchipp suggests that commissioning a studio may soon become a signal of very strategic taste and not just a line item in a brand budget. From signature styles to artisanal credibility, design is evolving from necessity to luxury, and studios may need to evolve with it, or risk fading into algorithmic noise.
Beyond “good enough”: Why design studios should stand for more than delivery.
In an AI-saturated industry, hiring a design studio may soon become a luxury move, much like choosing a bespoke suit over fast fashion. As AI assets flood the market with competent (but generic) outputs, studios are feeling the pressure to deliver more than just polished designs; what sets top-tier studios apart today isn’t ex*****on, but distinctiveness, authorship, and a visible point of view.
Much like fashion designers or filmmakers with recognizable signatures, studios may need to create, and celebrate, a design identity that stands out. Human-led creativity is becoming a form of brand signaling in itself. The words, “designed by…” carry more weight than ever, not just for quality assurance, but for the message it implies: this brand chooses craft, care, and character over the ease of automation.
