There's This Conversation About Whether The Nae Wulomo (High Priest Of The Ga State) Can Cross The Kpeshie Lagoon Between La And Teshie.
Now, we need to ask ourselves why and how did this injunction come about.
According to CC Reindorf in his classic historical book "History of the Gold Coast And Asantes", he relates an incident between the people of La and Nungua. By then, the town of Teshie didn't exist.
The story says that, the people of La And Nungua disputed over the Kpeshie Lagoon. This culminated into a conflict between these two Ga towns. In the end, the people of La under the leadership of Sowah Gborbilor defeated Borketey Larweh of Nungua who decided to retire into the sea and cursed his people for delivering him into the hands of his enemies.
This might be the reason why the Gborbu Wulomo of Nungua does not cross the Kpeshie Lagoon on account of the devastating defeat they experienced from the La people.
So how did this restriction affect the Nae Wulomo ?
Following the previous incident, Nuumo Larkotey Aduawushie (then Nae Wulomo) is said to have brought Lumor Bortey, the son of Borketey Larweh from Krepi (Present day Volta region around Akosombo) and trained him as a Wulomo. After Nuumo Larkotey Aduawushie had taken care of the town of Nungua for some years, he made Lumor Bortey the Wulomo of Nungua and came back to Ga Mashie.
However, there's this long standing oath between these two Wulomei that, none of them is supposed to cross the Kpeshie and see each other.
The pictures below are of a past Nae Wulomo in Anehor (present day Togo). This can never happen without the Nae Wulomo crossing the Kpeshie.
So we ask does that oath really affect the Nae Wulomo ?
