CAN YOU EXPLAIN YOUR BUSINESS IN 30 SECONDS, SO WELL ENOUGH FOR ME TO REFER YOU?

Not just tell me what you do.

Explain it so clearly that tomorrow, when I meet your ideal customer, I can remember exactly what you said and confidently introduce you.

Most business owners struggle with this.

We know our businesses extremely well. But when asked to explain them quickly, we use jargon, list everything we do, or speak so broadly that the listener still doesn't know who to refer to us.

And that's a problem.

Because sometimes, your next customer isn't listening to your pitch. Someone who knows your next customer is.

This is why the weekly commercial at every BNI meeting is more powerful than it appears.

Every week, members get 30–60 seconds to practise communicating four things:

Who do I help?
What problem do I solve?
What makes me different?
Who specifically do I want to meet?

Then they do it again the following week.

And again.

You become clearer.
You become more confident.
And, importantly, the people around you learn how to recognize opportunities for your business.

That's the real test of a referral pitch:

Can someone else remember it and repeat it?

The article below is a useful reminder of why that short window matters and how to make your elevator pitch clearer and more memorable.

For BNI members, here's your gut-check before your next weekly presentation:

If another member cannot explain what you do after the meeting, simplify your message.

For business owners who are not yet BNI members, there's an even bigger lesson.

BNI isn't only about exchanging referrals.

Week after week, you practise communicating your value, presenting professionally, building credibility and becoming easier to refer.

Clarity builds confidence.
Confidence builds credibility.
Credibility makes you referable.

Now, let's test it.

👇 Describe your business in ONE sentence in the comments:

“We help [WHO] solve [WHAT PROBLEM] by [WHAT YOU DO], so they can [RESULT].”

No jargon. No long company profile.

Can you make us understand your business—and know who to refer to you—in one sentence?

And if you'd like to experience how BNI helps business owners sharpen this skill every week, comment “BNI” or send me a message.

Opportunities are everywhere.

Your attention isn’t.

As a business owner, one of the hardest decisions is knowing what not to pursue.

Because when you commit to everything,

you give nothing your full attention.

Choose what matters.

Most entrepreneurs don't lose to the market.

They lose to the version of themselves the market exposes.

Under pressure...

Focus disappears.

Standards slip.

Communication breaks down.

Preparation becomes an afterthought.

Decisions become emotional.

That's why two businesses can face the exact same economy.....and end up with completely different futures.

The market doesn't create leaders.

It reveals them.

Sometimes—indeed, most times—the greatest businesses and most impactful projects are started with boldness and empty wallets.

You don't necessarily need money to begin.

You need ideas. You need people. You need courage.

The good news is that these three resources are often available to you at little or no cost.

💡 A great idea can change your future.
🤝 The right people can open doors you could never open alone.
🔥 Courage gives you the confidence to take the first step.

So ask yourself:

Who is in your room?
Who are you connected to?
Who is your resource?

Don't focus only on finding the wealthy person, the well-known name, or the public figure.

No.

Sometimes, your greatest resource is the person sitting next to you—someone who shares your vision, believes in growth, thinks like you, and wants to achieve the same level of success.

Connect with them.

Collaborate with them.

Grow with them.

That is one of the greatest lessons of BNI.

BNI is built on the belief that meaningful relationships create meaningful opportunities. It is a community where entrepreneurs and business owners help one another grow through trust, referrals, shared knowledge, accountability, and collaboration.

Your next opportunity may not come from your bank account.

It may come from the next conversation, the next introduction, or the next relationship you build.

Ideas. People. Courage.

Start there, and let the journey begin.

Who Challenges You?

One of the loneliest places in business is the corner office.

As a business owner, you make the decisions.
You carry the pressure.
You solve the problems.
You take the risks.

But here's the question...

Who challenges you?

Who asks the difficult questions before your mistakes become expensive?

Who tells you that your strategy isn't working?

Who holds you accountable when your standards begin to slip?

Who refuses to let you settle for mediocrity?

Your employees usually can't.
Your customers won't.

Your family may encourage you, but they may not always understand the realities of running a business.

Every successful entrepreneur needs people who are willing to challenge not just their decisions...
..but their ambitions.

Because comfort is one of the greatest enemies of growth.

It's easy to become comfortable with your current turnover.
Comfortable with your current clients.
Comfortable with your current way of doing business.

Then you walk into a room where another entrepreneur is building a business ten times bigger than yours.

Another is expanding into new regions.

Another is opening a second branch.

Another is speaking about systems, acquisitions, exports, or international markets.

Suddenly, your thinking changes.

You begin asking yourself:

"If they can do it... why can't I?"

The right environment stretches your imagination.

The right people raise your standards.

The right conversations expand your vision.

Growth is contagious.

So is ambition.

That is one of the greatest values of BNI.

Yes, we exchange referrals.

But beyond referrals, we challenge one another to think bigger, plan better, execute with greater discipline, and become better business leaders.

We celebrate success, but we also ask the questions that many business owners never hear:

"What's your next level?"
"What's stopping you?"
"Why are you thinking so small?"
"What would your business look like if you stopped limiting yourself?"

Sometimes, the greatest value of a business community isn't the business it gives you.

It's the person it helps you become.

So let me ask you one final time...

Who you?

If no one is challenging your decisions, your standards, and your ambitions, then perhaps you've outgrown your current circle.

Maybe it's time to find a room that refuses to let you remain average.

Perhaps it's time to experience BNI. https://lnkd.in/dUXrc-_q

Because when ambitious entrepreneurs surround themselves with other ambitious entrepreneurs, businesses don't just grow...

They transform.

Everyone wants more referrals but very few are willing to earn what comes before them.

A conversation.
A relationship.
Trust.
A recommendation.
A reputation.

The best referrals don't come from great salespeople.

They come from great relationships.

Build those, and opportunities will follow.
