Nakala?
Can we discuss marabouts? Let’s be real —no marabout has supernatural powers to take lives. They can’t kill someone with a spell. It's impossible! The Holy Quran made it clear that no power in the world can cause death to a person. Only Allah gives life and causes death.
What some of us don’t realize is that many people in the country are suffering from undiagnosed illnesses. When these illnesses flare up, we rush to marabouts, believing that someone has cursed us. But it’s often not a curse at all— serious diseases like cancer and HIV/AIDS are taking lives in The Gambia. Even allergies are killing people.
There was a beautiful young woman in Kololi who suddenly started feeling pain in one of her breasts. She went to the hospital, but they found nothing. Wanting answers, she traveled to Dakar, where doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer.
Her doctor in Dakar recommended a mastectomy to save her life. She called her family to let them know, but they urged her to return home to try traditional treatments instead.
Back in The Gambia, she visited a marabout who convinced her that a family member was behind her illness. She believed him and, feeling betrayed, moved out of her family home to live on her own.
When her condition worsened, she returned to Dakar. By then, it was too late. She only had a few days left. She went back to The Gambia, apologized to her family, and sadly passed away shortly afterward.
If you're sick, please visit a hospital and seek assistance from medical professionals.
If you're facing challenges in life, talk to your parents, a community elder, or an imam for support.
Think about it—how can a marabout living in a mud house help you become a millionaire? How can a marabout whose children are unemployed help you get a job?
