We were recently asked a simple question: “Should we use VR or AR to attract people to our booth?” 🤔
That's the wrong place to start. Never let the technology dictate the engagement - don't worry, we'll explain.
☝ First, a quick clarification: VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) both fall under the broader (eXtended Reality) umbrella, but they solve very different problems.
fully immerses users in digital and interactive environments, isolating them from their surroundings. It’s powerful for emotional storytelling, simulation, training, gamification, and high-focus brand experiences where total immersion matters:
- Simulating patient journeys and complex medical scenarios and processes
- Reliving historical moments
- Gamifying engagement through fully immersive interactive experiences
- Training employees for new roles in spatially accurate environments
💡 Pro tip: Because users are disconnected from the real world, VR experiences should be designed with comfort and safety in mind - which is why seated experiences are often preferred, as standing movement can sometimes cause motion discomfort or nausea.
keeps the users present in the real world present, while adding digital layers, interactions, or information. Instead of replacing reality, it enhances it, making it ideal when the physical world should remain part of the experience:
- Enhancing branded spaces with interactive digital layers
- Visualising physical objects in the actual space
- Virtually trying on clothes or accessories in real time
- Revealing extra layers of information in physical or digital objects
💡 Pro tip: Because users remain aware of their physical surroundings, AR experiences are ideal for movement, exploration, and real-world interaction.
So, the question isn’t “Should we use VR or AR?” but “How present should the audience remain in the real world?” or, even better, "What story do you want to tell?"
At LEAP we don't start projects with the hardware or the technology - we start with the experience you want to share.
