An exhibition of new paintings by Rudolf Stingel closes today, May 27, at Gagosian, rue de Ponthieu, Paris.

Stingel plays off Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s landmark modernist portrait, "Fränzi vor geschnitztem Stuhl" (Fränzi in Front of Carved Chair), recapitulating aspects of its radical composition while integrating elements of his own. In so doing, they introduce new dimensions of abstraction and representation, appropriation and originality to his work. Working intuitively, Stingel develops their surfaces via methods that are unique to his practice, incorporating layered patterns and dynamic, painterly brushwork: https://on.gagosian.com/3yrFoYj

Happy 85th birthday David Hockney! 🎈 We wish we were diving into your Californian swimming pool today. 💦

'A Bigger Splash' took Hockney around two weeks to paint, in contrast to the fleeting moment it captures. ‘When you photograph a splash, you are freezing a moment and it becomes something else. I realise that a splash could never be seen this way in real life, it happens too quickly. And I was amused by this, so I painted it in a very, very slow way.’ https://bit.ly/2UwXsPS

Find the painting on free display in a Walk Through British Art: 1960.

In the summer of 1914, Gustav Klimt vacationed in Weissenbach, a village on the southeastern shore of the Attersee in the Salzkammergut lake region of Austria. Klimt lodged at the forester’s house and painted it twice that year. In this bucolic picture, he reveled in the interplay between the open and closed windows, which offer tantalizing views into the house and beyond. A lush blanket of ivy covers the façade. The overall green tenor of the painting is punctuated by vivid spots of color introduced through blooming flowers in the garden and window boxes. Klimt’s passionate zeal for nature sustained him, and he found succor from the stresses of daily life and the requests of demanding clients through immersion in nature's revitalizing bounty.

This masterpiece is now on view in “Austrian Masterworks from the Neue Galerie.”

We're immensely saddened to hear that Dame Paula Rego has died. 💙 Her magical, powerful, visceral paintings told stories that changed the way we see the world.

This painting, featuring her son and husband, Rego proposed as 'a dance of life'—of which hers was extraordinary.
