BUILT FROM ZERO: In the Beginning

Before there were mountains, forests, oceans, animals, or people, Genesis describes the earth as formless and empty, with darkness over the deep. Then the story begins with God bringing order, light, life, and beauty into creation.

This is the creation story told in Genesis 1—a faith account, not a scientific chronology.

🌑 In the Beginning

There was darkness.

There was no beautiful landscape to admire. No forests. No cities. No animals. No human civilization.

Genesis describes the earth as “formless and empty.”

Then God began to create.

💡 Day 1 — Light

God brought light into the darkness and separated light from darkness, calling them day and night.

From darkness came light.

☁️ Day 2 — The Sky

The waters were separated, and the expanse of the sky was established.

Order began to emerge from what was unformed.

🌊 Day 3 — Land, Seas & Plants

The waters gathered, dry land appeared, and the seas were established.

Then came vegetation—plants, trees, and fruit-bearing life. Genesis repeatedly describes God's creation as good.

The empty world began to become beautiful.

☀️ Day 4 — Sun, Moon & Stars

The Genesis account then describes lights in the sky to distinguish day from night and to mark seasons, days, and years. It names the greater and lesser lights and the stars.

The heavens became filled with light.

🐦 Day 5 — Life in the Seas & Sky

The waters filled with living creatures, and birds filled the skies.

Life began filling the world.

🦁 Day 6 — Animals & Humanity

Genesis describes animals being created according to their kinds.

Then humanity is introduced as being created in God's image.

The world that began as formless and empty had become filled with land, oceans, plants, stars, animals, and humanity.

🌅 Day 7 — Rest

Genesis 2 describes the completion of creation and God's rest from the work that had been done.

Every great story has a beginning.
And sometimes, the beginning looks like nothing at all.

Built From Zero #001

Apple:
In 1976, Apple began with a simple idea: make computers personal. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started the company in a garage, building on the early Apple computer and then turning the Apple II into a major product. Apple officially dates its founding to April 1, 1976.

But Apple's story wasn't a straight line to success.

The setback

In 1984, Apple launched the Macintosh, a groundbreaking computer that helped popularize graphical computing. But the years that followed brought serious internal conflict and business difficulties.

In 1985, Steve Jobs lost a power struggle at the company he had co-founded and left Apple. He then created NeXT, while Apple continued without him.

The years away from Apple weren't immediately successful either. NeXT's computers struggled commercially, but its software technology later became important when Apple acquired NeXT in 1997.

By the mid-1990s, Apple was struggling with declining sales and a complicated product lineup. The company needed a new direction.

The comeback

In 1997, Jobs returned to Apple after Apple's acquisition of NeXT.

Instead of trying to do everything, Apple began focusing its efforts on a smaller number of products and on a clearer design philosophy.

Then came the turnaround.

1998 — iMac:
The colorful all-in-one iMac became a major symbol of Apple's renewed focus on design and simplicity. By April 2001, Apple had shipped its five-millionth iMac.

2001 — iPod:
Apple entered digital music with the iPod, which put up to 1,000 songs in a pocket-sized device and connected closely with iTunes.

By 2007, Apple had sold 100 million iPods.

2007 — iPhone:
Apple entered the mobile-phone market with the iPhone, combining a phone, iPod, and internet device with a multi-touch interface. Apple reported selling its first million iPhones within 74 days.

And the story continued with products and services including the iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, App Store, and more.

The lesson for entrepreneurs

Apple's story isn't simply “Steve Jobs was successful.”

It's about what happened after things went wrong.

A company that started in a garage eventually faced internal conflict, leadership changes, unsuccessful products, declining sales, and a period when its future was uncertain.

The comeback came through focus, design, innovation, and a willingness to change direction.

For a freelancer or startup founder, the lesson is simple:

Your setback doesn't have to be the end of your story. It can become the point where you rebuild differently.

Built From Zero isn't about people who never failed.

It's about what they built after the setback.

"When the bills are piling up and rest feels like a luxury you can't afford, what keeps you going?"

The room is quiet except for the hum of my laptop fan and the chirping of crickets outside. It’s 7:45 PM. My workday ended at 5:00, but my second shift is just starting.

I stare at my screen, heavy with exhaustion after a full day of work. To be completely honest, I’m tired. Tired of living paycheck to paycheck, watching debts add up, and carrying the entire weight of being the sole provider and parent for my family.

Every instinct in me wants to shut the laptop, collapse onto the bed, and just rest. It would be so easy to call it a night.

So why am I still sitting here?

Because staying where I am hurts more than staying up tonight.

I take a sip of water and open my learning tab. Up-skilling after a grueling day isn't a hobby for me; it’s a lifeline. When your brain is completely drained, trying to learn a new tool, master a new skill, or practice a trade takes everything you’ve got. Some nights, progress feels painfully slow, and doubt creeps in.

But then I look at my family, hold on to the faith that this too shall pass, and remind myself why I refuse to quit.

My 8-to-5 barely keeps our heads above water today, but the work I put in after hours is what will build our real security tomorrow. Cross my fingers, keep the faith, and take it step by step. I don't need to master everything tonight—I just need to show up for 30 minutes.

I type out the first line. Slowly, the focus comes back. It’s going to take time, but every late-night effort is bringing us one step closer to the breakthrough we deserve.

If you're out there grinding in silence for the people you love—what's the one goal that keeps you pushing when you're completely exhausted?
