It's natural to look at your competitors, to see what they are doing and try to get an edge over them. But rarely to businesses study successful companies in completely different industries to see what they are doing, and whether it can be adapted.

In fact, businesses usually resist doing something that is counter to normal practice in their industry.

It's good practice to stand back from your business and look for ways to make improvements. But studying successful companies in other industries will help you to break out of the tunnel vision that inevitably develops over time.

In a small community, dealing face-to-face, people are pre-disposed to trust and support. But online, without the personal contact, it's the opposite.

The level of misinformation, disinformation, scams and spam have made people naturally suspicious.

Gaining trust online is hard work, but the rewards if you can do it are well worth the effort.

Should you be podcasting (if you're not already)? It depends.

I've thought about it often, but I'm not sure that it's my medium. I prefer writing, despite the many benefits that come from podcasting.

However, I have taken a baby step: I now record an audio version of new blog posts and pages that I publish and, with help from some friends and Mr Google, I'm learning how to improve the quality of each recording.

I'm using very basic equipment: a reasonable quality headset with stalk microphone and Audacity – a free audio recording and editing app. Total outlay: USD15.99.

So if you want to play around to see whether podcasting might be your thing, it will cost you next to nothing.

The growth of mobiles for surfing the web has forced design trends to become simpler and clearer, but that trend must also extend to the copy you write.

Nothing puts me off reading a post more than a wall of text on my 2-inch-wide screen.

I do at least 3 edits of my weekly newsletter over a period of 8 days, all designed to make it more succinct.

Cutting down your masterpiece so that every word counts and none are wasted is hard – just remember Mark Twain!

Finding my ideal customer – something I've always struggled with. I've created personas, imagined the problems they had and created products to solve them. And got crickets.

Early in the pandemic I created my newsletter for people who got laid off and were starting their own business, but that didn't work either. There were too many detailed guides from business associations and the like, plus the requirements varied between jurisdictions.

I eventually became my own target market.

I'm growing my business, not starting it, and there's a much wider range of subjects to cover.

If you can write about your personal experiences, good and bad, as you promote your products or business, you will find and connect with your ideal customers almost without trying.
