🔥 Baixo Alentejo held its Demo Day 🔥

Baixo Alentejo held its Demo Day on April 17 in the pilot area within the scope of the FRED – Fire Free MED project, with the participation of the Situation Assessment and Reconnaissance Teams (ERAS) from the sub-region, CIMBAL and the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

💪Throughout an intense day of work, special emphasis was placed on the role of technology in preventing and fighting wildfires. The session also included a practical component, allowing participants to practice and better understand its potential in strengthening wildfire preparedness and response. 📡🛰️🔥

The Center for International Projects (CEMP) at the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies, proudly presented ongoing projects, including FRED at the 13th Career Day held on April 22, 2026.

Interreg Euro-MED FRED project was presented, highlighting its goals, activities, and contributions to international collaboration and innovation.🌍

The event brought together students, industry representatives, and institutions, creating a dynamic environment for networking, knowledge exchange, and career opportunities in the maritime and transport sectors.

🔥 FRSS ORGANIZED DEMO DAY WITHIN THE FRED PROJECT 🔥

On March 11, 2026, Fire and Rescue Service Sežana (FRSS) organized a “DEMO DAY” as part of the Interreg Euro-MED FRED project.

The event gathered project partners 🤝, representatives of protection and rescue services, institutions, and universities.

During the event, FRSS presented:
✅ pilot activity implementation (A2.2)
✅ project goals focused on wildfire prevention and monitoring 🌲🔥
✅ newly acquired equipment

🚁 A live drone demonstration showcased how unmanned aircraft can be used for:
• wildfire monitoring
• field data collection
• decision-making support in interventions

💻 A digital application for real-time drone image transmission and wildfire modelling was also presented, improving situational awareness and response efficiency.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange between research institutions and operational services.

🔥 FIFTH PARTNER MEETING OF THE FRED PROJECT HELD 🔥

On April 8–9, 2026, the fifth partner meeting and Steering Committee meeting of the Interreg Euro-MED project FRED (Fire Free MED) took place in Bihać (Bosnia and Herzegovina), hosted by National Park UNA 🌿

During the meeting, partners exchanged updates on project progress and agreed on upcoming activities. Discussions focused on:
✅ project work plan
✅ pilot activity ex*****on (A2.2)
✅ evaluation methodology (A3.1)
✅ development of the Strategy and Action Plan (A3.3)

Special emphasis was placed on cooperation with the Natural Heritage Mission 🌍 and preparations for the final project conference.

After the working sessions, participants visited the city of Bihać and Una National Park, including the impressive Štrbački buk waterfall 💧

🤝 The FRED project brings together 10 partners, led by the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies.

Rocca di Cerere Geopark held its Demo Day in collaboration with the University of Enna ‘Kore’, featuring the presentation of the FRED project and a live demonstration of drone applications in wildfire prevention.

🚁🌿 New technology boosting wildfire protection in Ulcinj! 🔥🛡️

As part of the Interreg Euro-MED Fire Free MED – FRED project, the Protection and Rescue Service of the Municipality of Ulcinj has been equipped with an advanced DJI Matrice 350 RTK drone, along with auxiliary equipment and a dedicated workstation.

📍 Located in the southeastern coastal region of Montenegro (255 km², bordering Albania), Ulcinj faces increased wildfire risks due to its Mediterranean subtropical climate, dry conditions, and dense vegetation—especially in the Old Olive Grove, home to 86,000 olive trees, some up to 2,000 years old! 🌳

💡 How does the drone help?

1️⃣ Preventive monitoring of remote areas
👀 Surveillance of the Old Olive Grove to detect unauthorized burning of vegetation after pruning—a common cause of wildfires.
➡️ Protecting valuable natural and cultural heritage, equipment, and local communities.

2️⃣ Enhanced support during wildfire response
🔥 Thermal imaging for hotspot detection
🗺️ Real-time fire mapping
🚧 Guidance for safe evacuation routes
➡️ Improving efficiency and safety for ground teams

3️⃣ Post-fire damage assessment
📊 Detailed analysis of damage to land, property, and infrastructure
➡️ Supporting recovery planning and future prevention

👨‍🚒 A dedicated UAS team (team leader, pilot, observer, and data analyst) operates under standard procedures, using the FRED platform for mission planning, live data streaming, and post-mission analysis.

Our partners Rocca di Cerere Geopark are hosting a Demo Day on April 15 at the Kore University of Enna, showcasing how drones are used in research, monitoring, and environmental protection within the FRED project.

The event will engage young students through practical demonstrations and expert discussions, inspiring curiosity and interest in innovative technologies.

🚁 Droni, innovazione e formazione per i più giovani

Il 15 aprile presso il Centro M.A.R.T.A. dell’Università Kore di Enna, si terrà un incontro dimostrativo con gli studenti della classe terza della scuola secondaria di primo grado dell’Istituto Comprensivo “E. De Amicis”.

L’iniziativa rappresenta un momento educativo e divulgativo, pensato per avvicinare i ragazzi al mondo delle nuove tecnologie e per mostrare da vicino le potenzialità dell’utilizzo dei droni nelle attività di ricerca, monitoraggio e tutela del territorio.

Attraverso dimostrazioni pratiche e momenti di confronto con gli esperti, gli studenti potranno scoprire come queste tecnologie innovative vengono utilizzate anche nell’ambito del progetto europeo FRED.

Un’occasione per imparare, sperimentare e guardare al futuro con curiosità e consapevolezza.
