🎬 THIS PLACE WAS NEVER JUST A FILM SET…

What looks like a forgotten old town in Java is actually Studio Alam Gamplong, one of Yogyakarta’s unique film destinations.

Located in Sleman, Gamplong was originally built as a massive outdoor film set for Sultan Agung: Tahta, Perjuangan, dan Cinta. After filming, the set was preserved and transformed into a destination where visitors can experience the world behind Indonesian cinema.

🏘️ Traditional Javanese buildings.
🏯 A Mataram-style pendopo.
🧱 A replica VOC fortress.
🌏 A Chinese-style village.
🎥 And streets designed to make you feel like you’ve stepped into another era.

What makes Gamplong fascinating is that these places were never originally built as a tourist attraction. They were created to tell stories through film.

Today, you can walk through those same sets and see how filmmakers turn an empty piece of land into an entire world.

The puppets are traditionally crafted from carved leather and brought to life by a dalang, who controls their movements, voices, and the story, accompanied by traditional gamelan music.

In 2003, UNESCO recognized Wayang as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

TENGANAN'S SACRED PERANG PANDAN RETURNS

One of Bali's oldest and most unique traditions is taking place in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Karangasem.
Known as Mekare-kare or Pandan War, this centuries-old ritual honors Dewa Indra, the Hindu God of war, courage, and protection.
