Exquise Patisserie - Christmas Under the Sea
The initial concept for the project was to celebrate Christmas in a way that does not feel disconnected from the people of Indonesia. Snow is not part of our lived experience, so rather than borrowing distant imagery, we chose to anchor Christmas in something deeply Indonesian; our tropics, our waters, our sea.
From there, guided by scent and rhythm, the design simply shaped itself. Spices that long shaped the taste of Christmas, cloves and nutmeg, both born in the Maluku Islands became our guiding star, combined with many of Maluku’s ornamentation.
At the heart of Maluku, is Ambon, the capital city, known as the City of Music. A place where melodies travel as the tides, where sound is a celebration. Here, the celebration of Christmas rebounds above seawater, with the drumming beat of tifa drums, along with the breath-like call of the tahuri shell horn, an echo of harmony between Muslim and Christian communities, lived and practiced over generations. Beyond the city, the sea-locked mountains of Banda Neira rise in quiet counterpoint, where land and ocean hold a calm, enduring balance.
Together, they form a gentle harmony: a Christmas hamper that feels closer to us, celebrating warmth, depth, and togetherness through the richness of the Indonesian sea.
