Wrapping up the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) we conducted last month.

The session was designed as a “bus stop thinking process” — a space to pause, reflect, and gather insights from key stakeholders, including regulators, business owners (both producers and distributors), and industry experts.

We were honored to have Dr. Ir. Sam Herodian, MS, IPU, APEC Eng., who provided a comprehensive overview of the government’s agenda and the current landscape of Indonesia’s dairy industry.

Dr. drh. Nuryani Zainuddin, M.Si, director of Animal Health Directorate Ministry of Agriculture also mentioned the importance of imported goods for the local needs to meet.

We also honoured to be visited by Prof. Dr. Ir. Ali Agus, DAA., DEA., IPU., ASEAN Eng., as Ministrial Advisor of MoA. he has been supporting us since the beginning with insightful view and strategy.

The FGD concluded with a shared understanding across all participants regarding the core challenges and opportunities in the sector.
In collaboration with CYPR, we will continue to refine strategies to strengthen Indonesia’s dairy industry — from boosting local production to re-evaluating the role of imports — in pursuit of a more sustainable and competitive future.

As a consultant, we’ve had the privilege of helping numerous companies navigate challenges and achieve success. Reflecting on these experiences, here are three key insights for thriving in Indonesia’s unique market:

1. Familiarity Builds Trust
Deals are more likely to close when there’s common ground—whether it’s shared products, personal connections, or local knowledge. Nothing beats shaking hands and having genuine discussions with locals to establish trust.
Fun Fact: With its massive domestic market, many Indonesian businesses don’t prioritize internationalization as much as counterparts in other countries. Double efforts to be "familiar" is needed

2. Flexibility is Key
Indonesia is price-sensitive but incredibly diverse. As an archipelago with thousands of ethnic groups, each region offers unique consumer behaviors and interests. Tailoring your approach to this diversity can unlock untapped opportunities.

3. Collaboration is the Foundation
Succeeding in Indonesia often requires long-term partnerships with local players. Their expertise in navigating complex business processes and networks is invaluable for sustainable growth.

Indonesia needs to develop non-traditional export markets like Latin America to ensure that we need diverse destination markets in addition to tapping the growing needs of Latin America. We understand that Latin American and Caribbean Players are more popular for their Sun, Beach, and Futbol however the growing opportunities in the region are something that Indonesian businesses cannot miss.

With utmost respect, we at BI International would like to say congratulations to our Strategic Advisor, Dedek Prayudi, B.A., M.Sc., for his new journey as our Country's Presidential Spokesperson at the Republic of Indonesia's Presidential Communication Office (PCO).

Dedek has a comprehensive background as a Researcher, Policy maker, Politician, Youth Development Activist, and Communicator. Graduated with a Bachelor's in Politics and Government from Victoria University of Wellington in Study New Zealand he continued his master's studies in Demography and Population Studies at Stockholm University before he came back to Indonesia and became a policy researcher at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Currently, He is also an Executive Director at the Center for Youth and Population Research in addition to becoming a Vice Chairman of Research and Development at the Central Leadership Council of Partai Solidaritas Indonesia.

Having a passion for the development of youth and Indonesia, He understands that the policy will always have unintended consequences, and to get the work done we need to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the policy choices will be mostly beneficial to all of its intended targets.
