Every website audit throws up a different combination of issues. Sometimes they’re technical issues, sometimes they’re design issues, sometimes they’re keyword targeting issues, sometimes they’re backlink issues.

An audit we’re finishing up this week had a data issue… there is no data. No Google Search Console, no Google Analytics. This makes an audit tough, but not impossible. We have to be creative in this situation.

We use pro software, we use competitor analysis… we use our experience. Then we start collecting data, everything’s better with more data.

Next week we start work with Hi Performance Roofing, an established business based in South Dublin, serving the city and surrounding counties.

There’s been some issues with previous providers, so there’s a lot of work to do on the website before we can even start on SEO.

But we can work on the Google Business Profile during this first phase, and there is a live site in the meantime, so not the end of the world.

It’s one of those “in-between local and national” type businesses that I talk about quite a lot; serving multiple counties, but not yet a national brand. We take this on in stages… Dublin first using location pages, then general service pages, then we move on to target other counties.

1 page websites don’t rank.
You need service pages if you’re a service business.
You need product pages if you sell products.

If your website is set-up right, the homepage ranks for your business name. Your service pages (and location pages if you’re local) rank for the service.

Photography Business Example

Homepage : ranks for “example name photography”
Wedding Photography : “wedding photography” “wedding photographer”
Wedding Photography Dublin : “wedding photographer dublin”

You get the idea.
A page can, and should rank for more than 1 keyword, but don’t think of it that way. Pick keywords that matter to your business; the words and phrases people use when they search. Then publish a dedicated page.

Do this for every service you offer, and every term people use to describe what they want. Your rankings will improve, I guarantee it.

You don’t need to be in front of a camera all day to position yourself and your company as the experts and thought leaders in your industry.

Yes, video works great for so many things, and a YouTube will drive traffic, but if that’s not “your thing” that’s ok.

Your website should tell a simple story; what you do (and why), who you do it for and why people can trust you to do it for them.

The last one is where a lot of websites fall down, but it’s the most important. What and who are the way you describe yourself, but trust is something different, that’s what other people say about you.

I look at a lot of websites, and they all need more reviews, more past projects, more awards and memberships. I know it’s hard to shout about yourself, but you need to let your website do the shouting for you.

P.S. I struggle with this myself. I’ve been “planning” to launch a YouTube channel for many years, and have never found the “perfect” time.
