Looking for things to do in West Cork this August Bank Holiday? From live music and local entertainment to scenic island trips, family-friendly activities and delicious seasonal recipes, the latest edition of What’s On In West Cork is your guide to making the most of summer in Ireland’s beautiful south west.

In this issue our history consultant, Michelle O’Mahony traces the origin and tradition of the August Bank Holiday. David Caldwell cooks up a pasta extravaganza, which will help to feed the family on a budget.

As we head into the autumn, families will be turning their attention on back to school 2026 so we have included a checklist as an aide-memoire.

There is still plenty of summer entertainment going on, most of the local bars have entertainment over the holiday weekend. For a great sunny day out why not take a boat trip to Sherkin Island from the harbour village of Baltimore. It is only a short trip but worth it to explore one of West Cork’s most attractive islands.

Our history columnist Michelle O’Mahony traces West Cork’s Digital Footprints of the Past and Connectivity. For farming enthusiasts, David Levy has written an article on the Ferguson TE20.

We are now in full flow with the festival season. We look forward to the Pike Festival Of The Bard which runs from 19th – 26th July.

A West Cork Summer

Let’s celebrate the summer with our special publication “A West Cork Summer”.

Hopefully we will have a well deserved and sustained period of high pressure where we can enjoy all the good things our region has to offer. From superb and dramatic scenery to wonderful boat trips exploring our islands or whale watching, fishing to cycling, walking, golfing and much more.

Apart from activities we have some great museums and heritage sites which will appeal to history lovers.

Our region has some wonderful, independent shops to suit book lovers, arts and crafts and textiles. It is a real pleasure to browse and select a memento from this fantastic region.

As regards music most of the bars offer entertainment over the summer months so a great evening is assured. Most of the bars have the entertainment on their social channels so it is easy to find something that suits.

West Cork has a whole host of wonderful eateries so you are sure to find something that appeals to you. We are known for our quality meats and fresh fish caught from pristine seas.

We hope you enjoy your summertime in West Cork!

In this issue we celebrate local food. We look forward to the Irish Yogurts Clonakilty Street Carnival which takes place on Saturday June 13th. Let’s hope for great weather as this is always a fantastic event which draws a huge crowd to the town.
A new Irish Chili Fest takes place at the Marina Market on 27th and 28th June.
Leap Horse and Pony Show will be held on the June Bank Holiday Monday (1st June) and is always a great family day out…

With the May Bank Holiday on the horizon, people are always looking for things to do.

Why not book a tour with the Clonakilty Distillery? Casey’s Bar and Restaurant in Clonakilty has a good line up of entertainment over the next two weeks.

On Monday 4th May the annual Tractor, Truck, Car Run takes place from The Fish Basket. This family event is always a fantastic occasion with plenty of food, fun and prizes.

Also for families, a trip to the Model Village in Clonakilty is always a journey of discovery and fun. The Wild Atlantic Pool in Baltimore hosts kids and adult swim classes, aqua aerobics and much more!
