Both shots taken on my crop sensor 750D with the 1.8 50mm Canon lens.
In the first picture the shutter speed is set at 1/40 and the aperture at 9.0 - the tight aperture provides a greater detailed depth to the image.

In the second picture the shutter speed was set at 1/500 and the aperture was at 1.8. The wide aperture blurred the background while the quicker shutter speed maintained the same exposure.
Class for shooting portraits.

For any type of landscape photography or situations when you’re trying to maintain detail over a relatively long depth, you’ll get better results with a higher aperture value.

When you want to focus on a subject for example, then having a low aperture and blurring the background is class.

The 50mm lens is an incredible glass too for an insanely good price!
