At Donabate Dexter our priorities are different, we are interested in producing and selling highest possible quality and tasty beef, we do that by using a natural, hardy, traditional, native Irish cattle breed, the pedigree Dexter.
Dexters thrive outside 365 days a year, and therefore we are able to:
Avoid animal shed confinement, which is a hugely significant factor in ill health in cattle.
Avoid all vaccinations, routinely applied to most cattle in conventional systems.
Only use medications including antibiotics extremely sparingly, as needed, which isn’t often
as the cattle are generally very healthy
Allow the cattle to breed, calf, and wean naturally in a single family unit, massively reducing animal stress.
Feed the cattle only grass (stored as hay and silage to assist in winter) and rough forage,
Dexters will eat all sorts of ‘weeds’ and undergrowth, in fact they will self ‘medicate’ with appropriate herbage given the space and freedom to do so. (Ie they will seek out plants which contain the appropriate vitamins and minerals that they need)
Manage our pastures on a rotational, natural basis, with no chemical fertilisers or pesticides, ever.
Grass fed beef is naturally better balanced in Omega 3/omega 6 ratio that grain fed beef which is standard supermarket fare (bad for cattle, and not so good for you)
We are not certified organic, for a variety of good reasons, including that we take hay from a nature reserve that is organically grown but not certified, and also as we rent different parcels of land frequently we can’t guarantee that they have had no fertilisers previously. But our standards are as high in all respects as any system we know of. We produce the very best beef from humanely reared and managed, non-polluting, (no slurry or artificial nitrogen) and in a low energy-intensive system.
Grass fed Dexter beef is naturally slightly darker in colour than grain fed supermarket beef, more intense in flavour, the steaks and roasts are generally smaller than you will be used to as the Dexter is a small breed.
