What’s new in social media this week?

From Threads becoming more independent from Instagram to Facebook testing limits on external links, here are four updates worth knowing if you manage social media for a business.

1. Threads ads are breaking away from Instagram

Businesses will no longer need a matching Instagram account to advertise on Threads. Meta is also introducing separate permissions for Threads, making it easier for businesses and agencies to manage the platform independently.

2. LinkedIn is testing a Network-only feed

LinkedIn is testing a new feed focused on posts from people you’ve chosen to connect with or follow. If rolled out more widely, building the right network could become even more important for organic reach.

3. Facebook is expanding its external link test

Some pages are being limited to two posts containing external links per month unless they subscribe to Meta One. It’s still a test rather than a platform-wide change, but it could make native Facebook content increasingly important.

4. Threads adds more tools for podcasters

Threads has introduced new podcast features including episode cards, reminders and performance insights. Creators can see engagement, clicks and saves, giving them a better idea of whether Threads is actually driving interest in their content.

What’s new in social media this week?

There are some useful updates for businesses and content creators, from new ways to showcase collaborations on Instagram to more interactive TikTok comments.

1. Instagram lets tagged posts join your main grid

When someone tags you in a post, you can now add that content directly to your main profile grid. For brands, this makes UGC, customer posts and creator collaborations much easier to showcase without having to repost the original content.

2. Meta launches a new Creator Marketing hub

Meta has brought its creator discovery and outreach tools together in one place. Brands can find relevant creators, contact them, manage permissions and turn suitable creator content into ads more easily.

3. Meta One adds new paid tools for businesses

Meta has introduced new subscription packages for businesses, offering additional features such as audience and competitor insights, AI tools and publishing features. Availability of individual features can vary by account and region.

4. TikTok adds new ways to comment

TikTok is making its comment sections much more interactive. Comment Polls are now available globally, while voice comments and photo carousel comments are rolling out globally. Voice comments can be up to 60 seconds, while photo carousels can contain up to nine images.

Five social media updates worth knowing this week:

1) TikTok is making comments more interactive with voice comments, polls and image carousels, giving creators and brands more ways to keep conversations going beyond the original post.

2) Instagram is tightening its approach to AI-generated profiles. Accounts using AI-generated people could see reduced reach if they are not clearly labelled.

3) YouTube has updated its paid partnership controls, giving creators more options around disclosures, age restrictions and geographic targeting.

4) Snapchat has expanded Unified Attribution, helping advertisers combine Snap performance data with measurement partner data for a clearer view of campaign results.

5) Threads has upgraded its analytics, with more follower and viewer data alongside AI-powered summaries designed to make performance easier to understand.

One of the most interesting developments in social media this week is the growing pushback against low-quality and misleading AI content. LinkedIn is taking steps to reduce the reach of reported AI slop, while Instagram is making AI-generated profiles easier to identify. Alongside that, Snapchat and Reddit have both introduced updates aimed at giving advertisers more control and better performance insights.

1. Instagram updates tags for AI profiles

Instagram is making AI-generated characters easier to identify, with clearer labelling around accounts that are not real people. As AI-generated personalities become more common, this should make it easier for users to understand exactly who, or what, they are interacting with.

2. LinkedIn pushes back against low-quality AI content

LinkedIn is putting more focus on low-quality, low-effort AI-generated posts. User reports are being used as one signal to identify this type of content, and flagged posts can see reduced distribution. For businesses using AI to help with content, the message is clear: useful, original and human content still matters.

3. Snapchat expands its ad attribution tools

Snapchat has made Unified Attribution available to all advertisers. The aim is to give brands a clearer view of how Snapchat ads contribute to conversions and overall campaign performance, making it easier to understand where the platform fits into the wider customer journey.

4. Reddit adds a 15-second video ad goal

Reddit is testing a new campaign optimisation goal focused on 15-second video views. Advertisers can use it alongside Reddit’s existing six-second video view option, giving brands another way to optimise campaigns for people who spend longer watching their video content.

Social media platforms are moving quickly again, so here are four updates worth knowing about this week.

1. Instagram launches First Draft for Reels
Instagram’s new First Draft tool can take selected clips and build a starting edit for you. It trims pauses and pulls together key moments, giving creators a quicker first version to work from before making their own changes.

2. Instagram tests automatic DMs from ad comments
Instagram is testing a feature that lets advertisers choose keywords that trigger a private message when someone uses them in a comment. It could make it much easier to turn ad engagement into a direct conversation with a potential customer.

3. YouTube changes how it counts views
From August 24, YouTube counts a view from the moment a video starts playing, from the very first frame. This now applies across Shorts, long-form videos, podcasts and live content. YouTube will still track its previous view metric as Engaged Views, which shows how many people actually continue watching beyond that initial start. Public view counts may therefore rise faster, so Engaged Views could become an important metric when judging real audience interest.

4. TikTok content is moving beyond TikTok
TikTok is expanding its Out of Phone advertising programme, allowing TikTok content and campaigns to appear on billboards, retail displays, cinema screens and other physical locations.
