It's time to brew up a new cure, because is punch-drunk on .
The Smithwicks Experience closure actually brings an opportunity to innovate.
This could be a great day, a turning point. Time to wake up, smell the hops and create something new. Diageo statement makes it clear- use of the building is open to suggestion. 300yrs of the same thing never lasts; Covid taught us this, be more resilient.
The concept is not a viable business model that can survive, so you look for something new. Not back to the same old.
Heritage is not lost because you don't associate it with tourism. Kilkenny is over-reliant on tourism making it vulnerable.
It's time to brew up something new for the asset, find a business model that will work, delivering value for all. Exploring new sectors to create employment beyond retail, tourism & food. Jobs that feed heritage, eat out and love retail therapy in the quiet November & January months.
Diageo has resources, capabilities and many problems to solve. ZX Ventures emerged from AB InBev (Check it out).
Making a connection between some of the Diago & Kilkenny aspirations beyond tourism will add vital energy, new opportunities and a badly needed vision.
It won't come from Chambers, a Counsellor or a TD. It will come initially from an industry-led approach. Time to get brewing again for the cure because Kilkenny is punch-drunk on tourism
