Congratulations Raphoe Fc on winning the league

Well, where do we start?

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but at Raphoe Town FC we have always believed that it takes a community to build a champion.

Winning this league title - our first in over 20 years – for sure is an incredible sign of the skill and talent we have in this great group, but it’s an even greater feat of character.

Without a doubt this victory belongs to this brilliant group of players, but it also belongs to the volunteers who year after year have kept - and continue to keep - this club going even when the trophy cabinet is empty.

It belongs to all of the coaches who spent wet and miserable nights nurturing our underage teams and managing our senior men over the years, patiently building the foundation for what we have seen this week.

While the league table highlights this fantastic win, the real story is in the years of invisible work. It is in the story of the volunteers who have dedicated so much of their time and effort to the club, the sponsors who continued to back and support us, it is in the story of those who have accepted our values and the 'homegrown' philosophy that saw every one of these players rise through our own underage ranks.

To look around this great group and see that every single player on the pitch came through our underage teams system was an unbelievable feeling. It is proof that our ethos - putting people and family and community over winning at any cost – can actually work.

We believe that being a 'good club' is more important than being a 'winning club.' Our club leaders have worked hard to accept every learning opportunity to grow and develop ourselves and the club through programmes like Donegal Sports Partnership’s “Building Positive Clubs” or Jigsaw’s “One Good Coach”, “One Good Adult.”

These have reinforced our understanding that we must always see the person before we see a player - so we can value, help and support them as individuals in any way that we can.

Raphoe Town FC is, after all, a grassroots club not a professional club or an elite academy.

We don’t pay players or try and run a factory for elite players – instead we focus on growth and development – as if we are tending a greenhouse for people. When we see our players as people first, we acknowledge that they have school, exams, jobs, and lives outside of football that matter more than any score line.

As a club - we have in the past, and we will always continue to be - available to our community and our people in their time of need. And it is by doing this, by prioritising our people and our community spirit over a 'win at any cost' mentality, that we hope to achieve something far more sustainable. We don't just want to develop great footballers; we want to help raise great adults who care about their community and keep this club going for generations to come.

We are just so proud of the young men who have come together this year - and despite a few very tough seasons over the past few years, showed real grit and determination to prove that where you start the journey doesn't limit where you can finish it.

For a couple of seasons we were second from the bottom in Division 2.

Today, we are champions – but that success isn't down to luck; it’s down to a refusal to quit on each other or this club. These lads and their hard working coaching team, didn’t just win a league; they have validated the way we do things.

To our younger players watching: look at this team. Not too long ago they were exactly where you are, and now they are champions. Let them be your inspiration.

This group has shown that with enough heart, you can always rewrite your own story.
