Palmerstown has been known by this name since the twelfth century when the lands here were held by the Hospital ofSt. John the Baptist without Newgate, otherwise known as the Palmer’s Hospital from the name of the founder Aelred the Palmer or Pilgrim. A “palmer” in medieval times was a pilgrim who returned from the Holy Land with a palm branch or leaf in the case of Palmerstown, the pilgrims were associated with the l***r hospital of Saint Laurence that was established in nearby Chapelizod.

Peter Robinson Settlers Exhibition, Cobh Heritage Centre
In the 1820s, Cobh, then known as Cove of Cork, was a relatively small fishing village with a growing importance as a naval base and port Cork Harbour, where Cobh is located, became an increasingly important refueling and assembly point for British naval and commercial ships, especially during the Napoleonic Wars. The 1820s also saw the construction of the distinctive
neoclassical naval stores, which are now a part of Cobh’s heritage. Furthermore, the 1820s witnessed the beginning of organised emigration schemes, with the first government-sponsored emigration plan to Canada being launched in 1822.
