After a very exciting first quarter of 2023, our team at Digipave is eager to continue pushing the boundaries of digital marketing and micromobility. From exploring new innovative solutions for micromobility transportation to developing strategies for social media advertising, we're thrilled to see what the rest of the year holds. But before we dive back into work, we're looking forward to some brief time off to celebrate Passover later this week!

(We're also really curious right now how the Paris vote against keeping shared e-scooters in the city will impact other markets: https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20230402-paris-votes-on-ban-for-rental-e-scooters. Will there be a ripple effect banning shared-micromobility in additional cities? Let us know your thoughts!)

Yoav took the Microlino micro car on a test drive last week - and he loved it, see below. What vehicle should we check out next?

----

I'm a big fan of the City Transformer - a micro car ๐Ÿš— that sets itself apart from its competitors not only through its revolutionary design but also through its level of engineering and the technology used. The fact that you can change the wheelbase of it while driving (move from narrow to wide mode) is only one of the really cool and useful features that this vehicle offers. There is also an amazing and talented team behind the City Transformer.

Today I had the opportunity to do a test drive with another micro car - the Swiss made Microlino. ๐Ÿš™ I drove it through towns and villages near Zurich airport for an hour. Here are my conclusions ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

The Pros โœ…
- Like any micro car, the Microlino is fun to drive ๐Ÿ˜Ž
- The acceleration is impressive, even uphill
- Even when driving at 80kph the stability is excellent. While I was driving it was snowing but the grip was still good โ„๏ธ

The Cons โ›”
- After hitting the brakes it takes a little longer to get to a standstill than I'd have expected from a vehicle of this size ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
- When pushing the gas pedal rather aggressively, the car makes a sound reminiscent of a whistle blow ๐Ÿ“ฃ
- The company slogan "This is not a car" seems slightly off to me after the test ride since the Microlino offers speed, comfort and transportation possibilities similar to a regular car.

Looking forward to testing more electric micro cars in the future! Share your thoughts โœ๐Ÿป below about your experiences with this vehicle category.

Key takeaways from the second and last day at the Infotech Velosuisse event - the yearly gathering of the Swiss Ebike and Bicycle industry:

1) What's mind blowing is the new Bosch ABS system for ebikes. Yes, Bosch is starting to offer an ABS that slows down your ebike and avoids collisions with humans or objects. The systems is smart enough to recognize whether the branch that you're going to hit in 1 second is wet or not. The Bosch ABS is a big milestone in terms of safety for electric bicycles. 2) What also caught my attention is the high end Cargoebike by a German company called CA GO. It's been designed for transporting children while its core is the elaborate cargo box which can absorb a significant amount of impact energy in the event of a crash. Read more > https://www.cagobike.com/en/fs200life

3) Here are some more insights I received from private conversations and lectures alike today:

- Many brands are increasingly opening their own stores, making life harder for existing local bike shops. The brands in question insist that they only expand when they identify "white spots" - areas where their brand is not sufficiently represented.

- One senior industry expert told me off the record that he expects around 20% of the small retail shops to go out of business within the next 2 years - mainly due to a lack of proper financial planning.

- Apparently major players in the car industry are worried about whether their current business model will still work in the future and they are considering to buy companies in the ebike segment. Within a few years most sold cars will be electric vehicles and they'll require much less repair work.

Looking forward to many more interesting conferences and events from the ebike and micromobility industries this year!

Digipave is excited to start the new year with an interesting conference!

Here are our conclusions of the first day at the Infotech Velosuisse event - the yearly gathering of the Swiss Ebike and Bicycle industry:

- Most shops have ordered way too many bikes and are now dealing with overstock. Several brand owners admitted during the panel discussion that they have produced too much lately.
- Certain retailers have bought new stock for the value of their 2022 revenue - creating a budget and cashflow planning could avoid that mistake from happening in the future.
- Many shops have owners in the 50+ age group that are very well connected in their communities, customers are local. It's a challenge to find successors to keep their SMBs running. Interestingly, bike brands have a big interest in keeping those small shops alive as 80% of Swiss bike customers buy local. Most shops also offer repairs which is crucial to keep consumers happy with their bikes (and the brands behind them).
- When it comes to electric and regular bikes, Swiss customers want high quality mountain, city- and gravel bikes. For trekking bikes demand has dropped sharply in recent years.
- The quality of the sold bikes is on a very high level, no major breakthroughs are expected in the near future. What's needed most now is biking infrastructure.

Looking forward to the second day tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates.
