Ever met someone who instantly made you feel comfortable?
Chances are, it wasn’t their outfit or their words. It was their approachability.
Approachability is such an underrated soft skill. It’s the invisible bridge that makes people feel safe enough to open up to you. And the good news? It’s something we can all work on with a few simple shifts such as:
✨Body Language
Maintain an open stance. Leaning in slightly, keeping your arms uncrossed, and maintaining a relaxed posture can all convey interest without using words.
✨Eye Contact
That steady eye contact that conveys your presence, not a look or a stare.
✨Micro-expressions
A slight smile, a nod, or even the movement of your eyebrows while you're listening are all signs of openness and empathy.
✨Tone of Voice
How you say something is just as memorable as what you say. Walls can be immediately lowered with a warm, soothing tone.
✨Small Acknowledgements
Words like "I see" or "That makes sense" let people know you're paying attention and not just waiting for your turn.
People forget what you said, but they never forget how you made them feel - This is what I always remind my clients when I work with them. Being approachable is about making others feel heard and respected, not about being too happy or agreeable.
For your next conversation, try this small experiment. Pay attention to your body language, respond more slowly, and include a sincere smile. The speed at which the energy changes will surprise you.
