Just watched this mind-blowing Veritasium video and I'm still shocked. They actually managed to pull ten thousand dollars from Marques Brownlee's locked iPhone using a clever NFC relay trick.
No Face ID, no passcode, nothing. It felt like something out of a spy movie but it's real.
The whole thing works because of a special setting on some cards called Express Transit mode. It lets payments go through quickly for things like transit but apparently leaves a small window that attackers can exploit with the right equipment.
Watching them do it live gave me that mix of "whoa that's cool" and "wait that could actually happen" feeling.
If you use Apple Pay make sure to check your Wallet settings and turn off Express Transit for your cards. Better safe than sorry. Have you seen this video yet? Drop a comment if it surprises you too.
