(Surely, the number of months according to Allah is twelve in the Book of Allah on the day He created the heavens and the Earth, of which there are Four Sacred Months.)

Islamic calendar begins with the month of Muharram, which is one of the great months. Allah (S.W.A.) praised it in above mentioned verse of the Quran. There is a special day in this month which carries a great importance, is called ‘Ashura’.

The Quraish of Makkah considered the day of ‘Ashura’ respectable day in their dark ages. On such day, the cover of Ka’bah was changed into new one and the Quraish used to fast. They must have got some narratives of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) about it. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) agreed with Quraish and joined them in good jobs regarding the faction of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH). On the basis of this, he used to go on a pilgrimage and to fast.

Only two tasks are established to do on the day of ‘Ashura’ by authentic Ahadith. One of them is to fast. In this month, keeping fast, not only on the day of ‘Ashura’ but in remaining days also, causes a great reward. But we must keep in mind that it is forbidden to imitate Jews in Ahadith. So our Prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said: The fast of ‘Ashura’ should either be prefixed or suffixed by another fast. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) also intended to have fast on 9th of Muharram next year.

Second one is that Islam instructed to do, on such day, is to become more generous for our family by providing more food to them. In the result of this act Allah (S.W.A.) increases our livelihood. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) reported, the Prophet (PBUH) said: The one who carries out generosity for his family by providing much more food to them, Allah (S.W.A.) surely increases his livelihood the whole year.

Muharram is the blessed and sanctified month. We cannot fully pay its rights without bearing the teachings of Shariah. So we must make ourselves entitled of Allah’s special blessings by engaging in prayers of this sacred month. But a few people violated the sanctity of this blessed month, specially on the day of ‘Ashura’, through various self-made rituals and innovations. In this month, they engaged themselves in sins instead of getting reward by binding themselves over these rituals and innovations. We must take notice carefully that just as the reward of worship increases in this month, in the same way there is an anxiety of increasing the punishment of sins. So it is must for every Muslim
to avoid each type of innovations in this month.

In conclusion, we pray that may Allah protect us from these acts of sin and grant us taufiq to do valuable acts in this month specially according to the studies of Islam.
Aameen.

Darul Uloom Deoband is a renowned study center of Islamic world. It is the biggest institution to preach Islam and the sources of Islamic studies in sub-continent. When the muslims were defeated in the movement of 1857, its foundation stone was laid down by Molana Qasim Sahab Nanotvi (R.A.) and other great Islamic scholars in 1866 A.D. In fact, it was the great Islamic and reformative movement that played a great role of revival and renewal of Islam. When the British Government started to convert the muslims into non-muslims and forced to adopt non-Islamic religion, Darul Uloom Deoband protected their beliefs. By this time, it produced thousands of students, who are serving the Islam throughout the world. After establishing Darul Uloom in Deoband, the chain of founding other Islamic seminaries commenced in the sub-continent of Asia.

The establishment of this institution on the soil of Deoband is a fruitful result of the sacrifices of our accomplished scholars. The service of religion, advocacy of Islam, renaissance of Islamic arts and teachings and assistance of the students are very important and particularized works of Darul Uloom Deoband. Darul Uloom Deoband has been guiding and educating the people in the perfect way, according to the path of our ancestors. As after the decline of Baghdad, Qahira was the center of Islamic teachings, in the same way, after the decay of Delhi, Deoband became center. It produced many dignitaries who served the Islam in different styles.

It will not be hyperbolic to say that the Darul Uloom Deoband is not only an institution but a movement. It is a school of thought. In the sub-continent, the teachers of the Islamic institutions are almost products directly or indirectly of Darul Uloom Deoband. Every year hundreds of students graduate from here, and they are performing their duties of propagating Islam through preaching and writing and compilations. Now this series has spread to Europe, America and Africa.

Darul Uloom Deoband has played a vital role of bringing Muslims of sub-continent to a prominent position in the religious life. It is not only an international educational institution, but also a center of intellectual development, cultural evolution and national moral, on whose right knowledge and wisdom, high civilized Muslims have always trusted and prided. Just as the Arabs once saved the sciences and arts of the Greeks from being lost, in the same way, Darul Uloom Deoband has rendered valuable services in the protection and development of Islamic sciences and especially the science of Hadith in this era. It carries a great importance in the history of Islam.

Darul Uloom Deoband did not serve the religion only, but it always was pioneer in serving and helping the nation in every critical situations. It offered unforgettable sacrifices. But today, it is tragic enough that, despite these, our national brothers have intention to destroy these Islamic institutes, alike to bite the hand that feeds one.

(You shall never attain righteousness unless you spend from what you love. Whatsoever you spend, Allah is fully aware of it.)

People belonging to various religions, castes, languages and occupations live in the world and they celebrate many festivals every year joyfully. But Islam is the only religion whose followers celebrate only two festivals in the whole year. And both festivals have great importance. One of them is Eid-ul-Adha.

According to Muslims faith and belief, Sayyidina Ibrahim (P.B.U.H.) dreamt of slaughtering his son but he ignored it. When he had dreamt of the same thing continuously for three days, he realized that this dream is definitely from Allah the Almighty believing that the prophets' dreams are true. Therefore, he did not think about it and took it as a command of Allah the Almighty. Although he loved his son too much, his belief in Allah the Almighty was so strong that he did not hesitate to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (P.B.U.H.) and he agreed to take a bold step and sacrifice his son. This act pleased Allah immensely.

Willingness of Ibrahim (P.B.U.H.) to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah excited the mercy of Allah and Allah caused to save his son's life by sending a heavenly ram through Jibrael (PBUH) to be sacrificed in the place of Ismail (PBUH). It was a reward from Allah the Almighty for Ibrahim (PBUH). It is because of this holy event of Islamic history that all Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha every year as per the Sunnah of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) to seek Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

Before the Prophet's migration, the people of Madinah used to celebrate two Eids, in which they engaged themselves in games. The Prophet (PBUH) inquired, what is the reality behind these two days. They said that we have been celebrating these two festivals in the same way from the dark ages. He said, "Allah has provided you with two better days than these. One of them is the day of Eid-ul-Fitr and the second one is the day of Eid-ul-Adha". (Abu Dawud: 1134)

Eid-ul-Adha is a very meaningful and memorable day, and it is an offering of one's life before Allah, which is offered as a substitute for an animal. On the day of Eid-ul-Adha, it is very easy to run a knife on the neck of the animal ritually and habitually, but if the example of Ibrahim (PBUH) is kept in mind, so a person has to first take all the stages into account through which Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) passed. The whole life of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) consists of continuous sacrifices. It was predicted by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH ) that all prayers and our submission to Allah are answered on Eid-ul-Adha occasion, so we should all repent and ask for forgiveness on the day of Eid. Beseech Allah the Exalted to forgive our ruinous as well as venial sins done during the hours of darkness or light. And make every possible effort to please our Lord.
