Delhi Sultanate in Southern India

The Delhi Sultanate was an Islamic empire based in Delhi that stretched over large parts of the Indian subcontinent for 320 years (1206–1526). Five dynasties ruled over the Delhi Sultanate sequentially: the Mamluk dynasty (1206–1290), the Khilji dynasty (1290–1320), the Tughlaq dynasty (1320–1414),[7] the Sayyid dynasty (1414–1451), and the Lodi dynasty (1451–1526). It was During the Reign of Alauddin Khilji that the Sultanate Expanded its Reach into the Deccan under his General Malik kafur.

The Deccan Policy of Alauddin Khilji was primarily based on economic motives. After his massive success in the North, Alauddin Khilji now turned his mighty hands to conquer the states lay in South and South-West India. But there was a sharp difference of motives between the expedition to the North and the campaigns in the South. He conquered northern countries and incorporated them into Delhi Sultanate but he extracted only money from the Deccan states and forced them only to accept his supremacy and pay annual tribute. Prof. Ayangar writes, “Alauddin’s object in invading the Deccan kingdoms was to make them the milch cow for the gold that he was often much in need of for proper maintenance of army to keep Hindustan free from internal disturbances and invasions by the Mongols from outside.” Dr. S. Roy has also remarked, “What he aspired to in the South was not the annexation of new territory, but huge tribute from the Hindu kings with a mere acknowledgement of his overlordship.”

The Founders of Vijayanagara empire

Hakka and Bukka were the first kings of the Vijayanagar Empire. Their real names were Harihara and Bukkaraya. The early life of the Founding Brothers are relatively unknown and most accounts of their early life are based on various theories, a Popular theory states that Bukka and Hakka were commanders in the army of the Kakatiya King of Warangal. After the King of Warangal was defeated by Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Bukka and his brother were taken prisoners and sent to Delhi. Both were forced to convert to Islam. Bukka and his brother eventually escaped, reconverted to Hinduism under the influence of the sage Vidyaranya, and founded the Vijayanagara Empire.

modern epigraphic research and interpretation of these inscriptions support the theory that the founders of the empire were local Kannadiga princes under the service of the last of the Hoysala king. According to them, inscriptions prove that Harihara I and Bukka Raya I were in the Hoysala service a decade before their arrival at Kampili (in modern Bellary district). Not only did the widow of Hoysala Veera Ballala III participate in the coronation of Harihara I in 1346, her name appears before that of the founding King Harihara I in a 1349 inscription, indicating he gained legitimacy for being a devoted heir of the Hoysala legacy.

Vijayanagara Empire existed as a South Indian empire based in the Deccan. Established in 1336 by Harihara I and his brother Bukka Raya I, it lasted until 1646 although its power declined after a major military defeat in 1565 by the Deccan sultanates. The empire, named after its capital city of Vijayanagara, has impressive ruins surrounding modern Hampi, declared a World Heritage Site in modern Karnataka, India. The writings of medieval European travelers such as Domingo Paes, Fernao Nuniz and Niccolò Da Conti and the literature in local vernaculars provide crucial information about its history.

The mingling of all faiths and vernaculars inspired architectural innovation of Hindu temple construction, first in the Deccan and later in the Dravidian idioms using the local granite. Secular royal structures show the influence of the Northern Deccan Sultanate architecture. Efficient administration and vigorous overseas trade brought new technologies like water management systems for irrigation. The empire's patronage enabled fine arts and literature to reach new heights in the languages of Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Sanskrit, while Carnatic music evolved into its current form. The Vijayanagara Empire created an epoch in South Indian history that transcended regionalism by promoting Hinduism as a unifying factor.

Islam in India and The South.

Islam is the second-largest religion in India, with 14.2% of the country's population, approximately 172.2 million people, identifying as adherents of Islam in the 2011 census.

Muslims in India existed in communities along the Arab coastal trade routes on the western shoreline of India particularly in Gujarat, and Malabar as soon as the religion originated and had gained early acceptance in the Arabian Peninsula, though the first incursion through sea by the new Muslim successor states of the Arab World occurred around 636 CE or 643 AD, during the Rashidun Caliphate, long before any Arab army reached the frontier of India by land.
(There Seems to be Peaceful Coexistence in the South with Regards to the Muslim population than in the Northern part of India due to the Early interactions of the Arab and Local traders)

Even before the life of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in the 600s, Arab traders were in contact with India. Merchants would regularly sail to the west coast of India to trade goods such as spices, gold, and African goods. Naturally, when the Arabs began to Revert to Islam, they carried their new religion to the shores of India. The first mosque of India, the Cheraman Juma Masjid, was built in 629 (during the life of Prophet Muhammad) in Kerala, by the first Muslim from India, Cheraman Perumal Bhaskara Ravi Varma. Through continued trade between Arab Muslims and Indians, Islam continued to spread in coastal Indian cities and towns, both through immigration and conversion.

According to a Popular legend it is said that the Kerala Chera King (Cheraman Perumal) is said to have traveled to Arabia bearing gifts and Converted to Islam.
