Possibly the most common misconception amongst graduates is the belief that higher education will materially help them in the performance of their jobs. And so way too many spend far too long in academia, studying 'relevant' courses.

Put it this way, within a few months the finance or economics guys had absolutely no advantage over me - I knew what I needed to know as well as them.

Humans adapt amazingly well, and that adaptation is incredibly specific. I had to adapt to my new environment, and I did. And so did all the other non-finance grads.

Look, studying computer science isn’t building an app or launching a startup, doing an MBA isn’t running a business, and studying finance is absolutely nothing like living investment banking.

Seven Tips for Young Professionals while Attending Office Dinners/Parties/Offsites

Youngsters just out of college need to understand that college parties with friends and office dinners/parties/offsites with colleagues/managers/senior leaders are completely different affairs.

1. Assess your company culture and dress appropriately.

2. Don't gossip about colleagues and don't criticize your organization even if someone else is.

3. Move around, get to know colleagues rather than sticking to a set of few office friends.

4. Be confident, speak with senior leaders. Get to know what are their hobbies outside work.

5. Avoid the temptation of drinking too much just because expensive alcohol is being served free.

6. Unless someone offers you a ride back home on their own, just book a Uber to head back home.

7. Avoid discussing work, cracking work related jokes and sarcastic remarks.

It's better to start a long corporate career with good social habits rather than regretting later.
