A sneak peak at this beautiful book my team and I have spent many years labouring over. It’s finally out! BANGALOREAN: Portraits and Stories from a Changing City will launch with a digital exhibition at Museum of Art & Photography museum this weekend.

I’ve realised one has to be crazy to design books (yes it takes a long time to create a 375 page tome!)! But there’s nothing quite like the feeling of holding a rich and layered book in your hands, and the smell of ink on paper. The fabric for the cover was custom dyed to get us that deep shade of green so that the metallic green foil would shine on it like magic! The old and the new, the tactile and the glossy come together on the cover to represent Bangalore, a city of paradoxes. A city struggling to keep up with its own promise - and the stories of the people - resilient, open and generous, that make up the fabric of Bangalore.

The idea for the book was birthed by the curator Kaveri Sinhji, Photography by Ekaterina Zhilina-Antoni and Chris Page, Text by Farrah Gillani and Melissa Parkerton. And finally my talented design team who’ve made this all happen Prashant Varma, Robby Banner and the best printers in India who did countless experiments to get that cover right! Pragati Group

Our Creative Director Reminisces:

Very sad to share that our wonderful film-poster artist and long-time collaborator, Sampath passed away on April 19, 2024.

Sampath had great skill, one of the few remaining film-poster artists from the pre-digital, pre-flex era. This was a time when heroes, heroines and villains were hand-painted larger than life, with animated gestures and saturated colors, emotions and drama brought alive to draw crowds into the cinema.

I remember, when we designed the MTV offices in Bangalore and Mumbai (in collaboration with ) in the late ‘90s, we wanted to bring the layers and energy of the city into the office space – much like MTV was doing with its programming. Embracing the local, repackaging it, making it cool, and giving back to the Indian youth, a new and exciting version of the everyday.

So, we went on an expedition into the lanes of Malleshwaram, where film-poster artists sat in their studios made of bamboo, and there we discovered Sampath. This wonderful, talented, artist – ready to experiment and have some fun.

We overcame the language barrier through gestures and sketches, moving between hand-drawing and photoshop – Sampath was a little puzzled that the hero’s face was to be painted pink, and his cheek would in-fact be a drawer that opens for storage. Or that, we were putting together a dilapidated auto-rickshaw as a reception table. But he played along, and I watched in fascination as he translated the little hand drawing with great precision onto a bold, eye-catching mural.

Sampath continued to collaborate with TSK from walls to books, and helped create a joyful India inspired alphabet book, ABCDesi.

TSK is grateful to Sampath for or all the vibrant work he created, bringing our vision to life.

Much has changed from the late ’90s in terms of our cities, globalisation and technology. But MTV remains one of our favourite projects for its unrestrained youthfulness and its celebration of the local.

We created the brand identity for Taram, a global, tech-forward textile company, rooted in Ramco values. Taram’s symbol is the letter ‘t’. It radiates five fiber-like forms that resemble waves moving upwards and beyond. Together, they represent the brand promise ‘Go Beyond’ and purpose ‘To Create Solutions that Elevate Lives’.

The waves in the symbol are interpreted in interesting ways to bring alive Taram’s values and create a layered brand language that extends from print to digital.

Our branding projects begin with a deep discovery process where we uncover brand truths. For Taram, we travelled into the heart of Tamil Nadu, to the textile town of Rajapalayam.

That’s where we saw, first-hand, Taram’s impact not just on the world of textiles, but on the culture, education, healthcare and people of the entire region.

Whether building 9 free schools, underwriting the education of 10,000+ children every year, providing homes for tribal children, growing a precious library of Vedanta literature, or building centres of meditation open to public… we realised, here is a brand that is sharing prosperity and making impact every day.

We knew this extraordinary culture had to be articulated in Taram’s brand story. That’s how we arrived at Taram’s name, its brand purpose ‘Creating Solutions to Elevate Lives’, and its promise ‘Go Beyond’.

The opportunity to work with such an authentic brand has been a privilege. And we hope we’ve successfully communicated its impact through branding!

Taram emerged as the ideal name for a global, tech-forward textile company, rooted in Ramco values. Headquartered in the textile town of Rajapalayam, the brand required a name that is international (easy to pronounce) yet contextual (has meaning locally). In Tamil, Taram means ‘quality’ and in Sanskrit ‘to go beyond’ – both meanings reinforce the brand’s core values.

Taram’s symbol is the letter ‘t’. It radiates five fiber-like forms that resemble waves moving upwards and beyond. Together, they represent the brand promise ‘Go Beyond’ and purpose ‘To Create Solutions that Elevate Lives’.
