Just three days after launching its highly anticipated, next-generation “Mythos-class” model—Claude Fable 5—Anthropic was ordered by the US Department of Commerce to suspend all access to foreign nationals, both inside and outside the United States. This includes Indian citizens, international tech clients, and even Anthropic’s own foreign-national employees.
While standard Claude models (like Sonnet and Haiku) continue to work normally in India, the sudden block of Fable 5 has caused a massive ripple effect in the Indian tech ecosystem:
Disrupted Tech Pipelines: Indian startups and developers who had instantly begun building production-grade applications on top of the Fable 5 API had their workflows frozen overnight.
The “Death of Globalization” Debate: High-profile Indian tech leaders, including Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu, have heavily criticized the move. Vembu warned that “globalization is dead and Bharat must find her own way ahead,” urging India to invest heavily in national open-source AI infrastructure rather than relying on volatile, foreign-controlled frontier models.
