BHUBANESWAR: Dream Team Sahara (DTS), the private agency operating buses in Bhubaneswar, has recruited 10 women conductors and 20 other female staff to assist their male counterparts in better management of passengers from November 10. The move comes in the wake of complaints of harassment of female passengers by some male employees.

At present, four female conductors work in four women-only city buses. "The newly-appointed woman conductors would perform their duties in buses carrying both male and female passengers. Initially, only a few buses will have them on board. Subsequently, all 125 city buses will have women conductors in day shift," DTS chief executive officer Sudhansu Jena told TOI.

Besides, DTS will now have a team of women employees called "passenger caretakers".

Their responsibility will be to address the grievances of female passengers. "It will be a mobile team that will visit buses and bus stops to solve problems of women passengers. At bus bays, they will update waiting passengers on the frequency of buses," Jena said.

These apart, DTS will soon form a woman ticket checking team. "Presence of female staff in the bus would create a safer and friendlier environment for women passengers. At times, our male conductors and ticket checking staff face difficulty while dealing with women," Jena said.

In a related move, the state government will soon install closed-circuit television cameras in these buses to check eve-teasing and hooliganism.

"It is a good initiative by DTS. It will not only give a professional look to the bus service, but also promote woman empowerment," said Anuradha Mohanty, a social activist.
