This scene captures one of the most profound moments of the Mahabharata—the fall of Bhishma Pitamah on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Bound by his vow and unwilling to fight Shikhandi, whom he regarded as female due to a past-life connection, Bhishma lowers his weapons and accepts destiny. Standing behind Shikhandi, Arjuna fulfills his duty as a warrior and releases the arrows that bring down the grandsire, while Krishna watches, ensuring that dharma prevails over personal attachment. The moment symbolizes the triumph of righteousness over emotion, the inevitability of destiny, and the painful sacrifices required to uphold justice. Bhishma’s surrender is not a defeat born of weakness but a conscious act of wisdom, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to truth, duty, and the divine will.

The story of Bhishma’s “bed of arrows” (Sharashayya) is one of the most moving episodes in the Mahabharata.

During the Kurukshetra War, Bhishma led the Kaurava army for the first ten days. Because of his immense skill and divine blessings, no warrior could defeat him. Knowing this, the Pandavas sought a way to bring him down. Bhishma had vowed never to fight a woman. Therefore, on the tenth day, Shikhandi—who had been born female and later became male—was placed in front of Arjuna. Seeing Shikhandi, Bhishma lowered his weapons and refused to fight. Taking this opportunity, Arjuna released countless arrows that pierced Bhishma’s body.

As Bhishma fell, his body did not touch the ground because it was supported by the many arrows lodged in him, forming a “bed of arrows.” Since he possessed the boon of Ichha Mrityu (the power to choose the time of his death), he did not die immediately. Instead, he lay on the bed of arrows for many days, waiting for the auspicious time of Uttarayana (the sun’s northward journey). During this period, he shared profound teachings on duty, leadership, morality, and governance with the Pandavas, especially Yudhishthira.

One famous incident tells how Bhishma felt thirsty while lying on the arrows. Arjuna then shot an arrow into the earth, causing a stream of water to emerge and quench Bhishma’s thirst. Finally, when Uttarayana arrived, Bhishma peacefully left his mortal body, attaining liberation.

The bed of arrows symbolizes sacrifice, endurance, wisdom, and mastery over one’s destiny.
