What the Facebook âBreaking Newsâ label means to publishers.
Facebook is testing a feature called âBreaking Newsâ. Currently rolled out to 50 publishers, the feature aims at combating fake news while focusing on garnering real-time engagement on news articles.
What is âBreaking Newsâ anyway?
Publishers can now tag their articles with the Breaking News label to emphasize importance and authenticity of a piece of news. Publishers can use the tag once a day tagging an Instant article, mobile link, web link or even a Facebook live video.
Since the tag is limited to one article a day, publishers will have to pre-plan the tag for the most important news article, which will ensure quality content for the readers. High quality content will ensure a better engagement rate thus in some way reducing the costs of pushing out content via paid efforts.

The feature is currently available to all of 50 publishers across North America, Latin America, Australia and Europe and will soon be rolled out across the globe.
