When a Drunken Brawl Becomes a Communal Flashpoint: Lessons from the Litan Incident

The recent incident in Litan, where an individual-level drunken altercation spiralled into a communal confrontation, is yet another stark reminder of how fragile the law-and-order situation remains in Manipur. Public Appeal: Do Not Communalise Individual or Minor Issues

In recent times, there has been a growing tendency to interpret individual disputes and small local incidents through a communal lens. This is deeply concerning and dangerous. Every disagreement between persons or groups does not represent a conflict between communities. When we hastily attach communal identities to personal or minor issues, we risk igniting tensions that can spiral far beyond the original matter.

Communal clashes are costly in every sense. They take innocent lives, destroy homes and livelihoods, disrupt education and economic activity, and leave long-lasting psychological scars. Years of social trust can be shattered within hours. Communities that have coexisted peacefully for generations are pushed into suspicion, fear, and division.

We must remember that violence benefits no one. It weakens society, drains public resources, and slows development. The price is paid most heavily by ordinary citizens — workers, students, families, and the vulnerable — who seek only peace and stability.
Let us commit to responsible behaviour and restraint. Before reacting, verify facts. Before sharing information, consider its impact. Community leaders, civil society, media, and citizens must work together to calm tensions, not inflame them. Differences should be addressed through dialogue, law, and democratic processes — not through collective blame or retaliation.

Peace is not the absence of disagreement; it is the presence of wisdom in handling it. Let us refuse to communalise individual or small issues, and instead choose understanding, accountability, and coexistence. The future of our society depends on our ability to act with maturity, empathy, and responsibility.
