AMD downplays publicly disclosed security flaws, plans to release fixes in the coming weeks
on Tuesday issued its first public update regarding security vulnerabilities involving select products publicly disclosed by Israeli-based security firm -Labs on March 13. In today’s , said it has been working to rapidly assess the claims and develop mitigation plans where needed.

If you recall, was given less than 24 hours notice prior to CTS going public with its alleged findings. The short turnaround sparked widespread regarding potential motives behind the disclosure as standard practice in the security community is to give 90 days notice before going public.

Mark Papermaster, ’s senior vice president and chief technology officer, seemingly downplayed the matter, saying the security issues are not related to its Zen CPU architecture or the Google Project Zero exploits announced in early January. Instead, they are linked to the firmware managing the embedded security control processor (AMD Secure Processor) and the chipset used in some AM4 and socket TR4 desktop platforms.

He also pointed out that all of the issues raised by CTS require administrative access to a system, “a type of access that effectively grants the user unrestricted access to the system and the right to delete, create or modify any of the folders or files on the computer, as well as change any settings.”
says that any attacker gaining unauthorized admin access “would have a wide range of attacks at their disposal well beyond the exploits identified in this research.” What’s more, he notes that all modern operating systems and enterprise-quality have “many effective security controls, such as Microsoft Windows Credential Guard in the Windows environment, in place to prevent unauthorized administrative access that would need to be overcome in order to affect these security issues.”

Papermaster pointed to a “useful clarification” of the difficulties associated with successfully exploiting the issues in this post from Trail of Bits.

The said it has completed its assessment and is already working on developing and deploying mitigations. Patches through BIOS updates are expected in the coming weeks and shouldn’t have an impact on performance, we're told.

aged 76, family says

He died peacefully at his home in in the early hours of this morning, according to a statement from his family.

"His family have kindly requested that they be given the time and privacy to mourn his passing, but they would like to thank everyone who has been by Professor Hawking's side — and supported him — throughout his life," the statement said.

His children Lucy, Robert and Tim said they were deeply saddened by their father's passing.

"He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world," they said.
Professor Hawking sought to explain some of the most complicated questions of life while himself working under the shadow of a likely premature death.

In 1963 Professor Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and was given two years to live.

He went on to become a researcher at the University of Cambridge and Professorial Fellow at the Gonville and Caius College.

He was a Lucasian Professor at the university from 1979 to 2009, a position previously held by Isaac Newton in 1663.

His was dubbed one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein.

His work ranged from the origins of the universe itself, through the tantalising prospect of time travel to the mysteries of space's all-consuming black holes.

But the power of his intellect contrasted cruelly with the weakness of his body, ravaged by the wasting motor neurone disease he contracted at the age of 21.

Hawking was confined for most of his life to a wheelchair. As his condition worsened, he had to resort to speaking through a voice synthesiser and communicating by moving his eyebrows.

The disease spurred him to work harder but also contributed to the collapse of his two marriages, he wrote in a 2013 memoir My Brief History.

In the book he related how he was first diagnosed: "I felt it was very unfair — why should this happen to me."

"At the time, I thought my life was over and that I would never realise the potential I felt I had. But now, 50 years later, I can be quietly satisfied with my life," he wrote.

Google releases Android P Developer Preview

It was rumored that would release its preview of next week, but the initial build arrived yesterday. It’s aimed squarely at devs, allowing them to see what changes have been implemented in the next mobile OS, so there isn’t a lot of information on what everyday users can expect. But the preview has revealed some interesting details.

As reported last month, —still no confirmation that it will be called Pistachio Ice Cream—features built-in support for handsets with iPhone X-style notches. These have appeared in several phones, including the 5, Noa , and ’s G7 (or whatever it will end up being called). The preview allows developers to see how their apps will work with the cutouts.

One feature likely to appeal to the billions of messaging app users is the revamped notifications. These can now include multiple lines from conversations, and users will be able to select images, stickers, and ’s from within the notification itself. You might also notice that the settings panel and notifications drawer now have rounded corners, though this could change in the final release.

Another previously reported feature has also been confirmed: Android P will stop malicious apps from accessing a ’s camera and microphone. “Android P restricts access to mic, camera, and all sensors from apps that are idle,” writes .

Other changes include support for video and HEIF, a multi-camera API that allows developers to access data from more than one camera at once, and support for WiFi (round-trip time), which improves the accuracy of indoor tracking by measuring the distance between -Fi access points without connecting to them.

Power-efficiency tools like Doze, Standby and Background Limits are being upgraded in Android P. There are also improvements to , privacy, performance, and Kotlin optimizations. The Autofill function is getting a boost, which should make using password managers easier, and the OS will warn users when they install an app that “targets a platform earlier than 4.2.”

You can download and flash the developer preview of P if you have a Pixel, XL, 2, or 2 XL—Google has confirmed that the 5X, 6P, and Pixel C tablet won’t be getting Android P when it’s released. The company warns that “this initial release is for developers only and not intended for daily or consumer use.” We’ll learn more about at /O in May.

Google sued for 'hiring discrimination' against white, Asian males

SAN FRANCISCO: has been sued by a former employee for allegedly pressuring recruiters to only look for female and Latina applicants and that the video-sharing platform had last year stopped White and Asian males for technical positions.

The lawsuit claims that the tech giant would only from historically under-represented groups for positions.

"YouTube last year stopped hiring White and Asian males for technical positions because they didn't help the world's largest video site achieve its goals for improving diversity, according to a lawsuit filed by a former employee," The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

Arne Wilberg, a , who spent nine years working at , had filed a lawsuit against in January.

Wilberg claimed that implemented "clear and " meant to exclude white and Asian men in an attempt to increase the company's overall diversity.

He also claimed that the tech giant retaliated against him for opposing these policies, eventually firing him in November 2017, according to The Verge.

The lawsuit slapped on Google also targets 25 unnamed Google employees who allegedly enforced discriminatory hiring rules, quoting a number of emails and other documents.

The tech giant was sued last week by a woman software engineer alleging that it has a "bro-culture" that allowed her to be sexually harassed daily while the company did nothing to intervene.

Loretta Lee, who started working for Google in 2008 and was fired in 2016 for poor performance, filed the suit in February against Google for sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and wrongful termination in a California court.
