Wheat Output Seen at 120 MMT
New Delhi. The Union Agriculture Minister stated that a record 117.94 million tonnes of wheat were produced domestically during the 2024-25 Rabi season, and production in the current 2025-26 season is expected to exceed that.
Continuing this trend, the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) in Karnal has estimated that wheat production will reach an all-time high of 120 million tonnes.
According to the institute, not only has the area under wheat cultivation surged to a new record level, but approximately three-quarters of the area has been sown with climate-resilient varieties that have a greater capacity to withstand adverse weather conditions.
The Meteorological Department has predicted above-average temperatures in February and March, which could pose a threat to the wheat crop, as flowering and grain formation occur during these two months.
However, the institute says that the higher temperatures will not significantly affect the crop, and if the crop receives regular irrigation through rainfall or artificial means, a bumper harvest is expected once again.
According to official figures, the area under wheat cultivation has increased by 613,000 hectares from 32.804 million hectares in 2024-25 to a new record level of 33.417 million hectares in the current 2025-26 season, which is about 2.2 million hectares more than the five-year average area of 31.235 million hectares.
The crop condition is normal in most areas, and the weather remains favorable. Several areas need rain. If there are one or two showers in the next few days, the crop condition will improve further.
The expectation of a bumper harvest has stabilized wheat prices, while the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has resumed the sale of its wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).

Wheat crop condition satisfactory with strong sowing progress
New Delhi: Sowing of wheat—the most important food grain of the rabi season—has almost been completed or has reached its final stage. The crop condition is satisfactory, and if weather conditions remain favourable, production could turn out to be better. According to the Central Agriculture Commissioner, as of December 29, 2025, the total area under wheat cultivation in the country has improved to 32.26 million hectares. This is higher than the sown area during the same period last year as well as the five-year average, though it remains below the record full-season area of 32.8 million hectares achieved in the 2024–25 rabi season, when wheat sowing had seen a sharp rise.

The Agriculture Commissioner stated that, barring a few pockets in Bihar, wheat sowing has been almost completed across the country. It appears that the gross area under wheat cultivation for the entire 2025–26 season may reach close to that of the 2024–25 season. A notable point this year is that more than 73 percent of the total area has been planted with improved and developed wheat varieties that are more resilient to adverse weather and climatic conditions and are bio-fortified. Seeds of these varieties have a greater capacity to withstand unfavourable conditions and poor weather.

According to the Agriculture Commissioner, wheat sowing this season was carried out on time and at an early stage, and the crop outlook appears better everywhere. So far, no reports of problems or challenges affecting the wheat crop have been received from any state or region.

The government has set a wheat production target of 119 million tonnes for the current 2025–26 rabi season, which is an all-time high. If weather conditions remain favourable, this target can be achieved comfortably. Record wheat production would ensure adequate supplies for the government’s welfare schemes.

Where is India’s agricultural policy ecosystem heading?
New Delhi. India’s agri-value chain today appears more fragmented and anxious than ever, with multiple industries simultaneously seeking policy interventions. Despite recent duty hikes, the pulses industry continues to demand higher import duties, arguing that heavy inflows from overseas are still suppressing domestic prices. The edible oil industry is pressing for an increase in import duties on both crude and refined oils, along with export incentives for oilseed meals.
The sugar sector is urging the government to revise the MSP of sugar upward, while maize- and sugar-based industries are advocating for a hike in ethanol procurement prices to maintain viability. In contrast, the poultry industry—stressed by feed costs—is asking for permission to import maize.
The wheat industry is requesting the government to at least open exports of wheat products, given the rising stock pressure and weak domestic demand. Meanwhile, the rice industry is struggling with massive inventories and remains unsure about what relief to seek. The cotton sector, on the other hand, wants imports restricted to support domestic prices.
These diverse and often contradictory demands reflect deep stress across agricultural value chains. Nearly every segment is seeking urgent government action—ranging from higher MSPs and export relaxations to import restrictions and duty revisions.
At this point, the larger question remains: Where is India’s agricultural policy ecosystem heading, when nearly every sector is asking for intervention at the same time?

All pulse prices below MSP, farmers worried; low prices may increase import dependency, urgent intervention needed
News Capsule: All pulse prices below MSP, farmers worried; low prices may increase import dependency, urgent intervention needed
★ On 3 December 2025, chana, urad, tur, moong and masur—all pulses—were being sold significantly below the Minimum Support Price. In Latur, chana reached 5,400 rupees, urad 6,200 rupees, and tur 6,700 rupees per quintal, while their MSPs are 5,875, 7,800 and 8,000 rupees respectively. Similarly, moong in Sumerpur is being sold at 7,500 rupees and masur in Sagar at 6,300 rupees, which is much lower than the MSP.
★ The government recently imposed 30% import duty on peas and 10% import duty on masur and chana to stabilize prices, but no improvement is visible in the market. During the kharif season, farmers had already sold moong and urad at lower prices, and now the new tur arrivals have also begun with weak price trends.
★ Rabi season pulses—chana and masur—are also being sold below MSP, even though their sowing is currently in progress. Thanks to good rainfall, farmers are sowing, but the impact of persistently low prices is now becoming visible. The acreage of peas is expected to decline this year because its prices are much lower compared to last year.
★ If farmers do not receive fair prices, why would they grow pulses? If pulse prices continue to remain below MSP and farmers reduce production, the country’s import dependency may increase further, affecting national food security. Constantly falling prices are not only hurting farmers’ income but are also putting the entire pulse industry and trade at risk.
★ There is an urgent need for government intervention in the market. Either effective government procurement should begin, or changes should be made in import duties.

Chile’s Walnut Shipments Rise, but Exports to India Decline
Santiago. Global demand for walnuts from Chile, a country located in the South American continent, remains generally strong, but exports to India are showing signs of a slight decline. Shelled walnuts (in whole form) are trading well, and European Union countries are showing keen interest in purchasing them. October proved to be a significant month for walnut exports from Chile.
According to official data, shelled walnut exports from Chile increased by 35 percent to 9,123 tons in October 2025 compared to October 2024, and unshelled walnut shipments jumped 55 percent to 5,603 tons.
During the first eight months of the current marketing season, March-October 2025, shelled walnut exports registered a strong increase of 29 percent.
Although India is considered a leading buyer of Chilean walnuts, its exports there declined by 11 percent.
Generally, Chilean walnut exports to Asia and Oceania performed somewhat poorly, with shipments declining by approximately 10 percent in the current season.
Meanwhile, exports to Turkey increased by 63 percent during the same period, while exports to the United Arab Emirates increased more than tenfold.
In fact, Chilean walnut exports to the Middle East, Asia, and Africa increased by more than 100 percent in the current marketing season, reaching a peak of 32,785 tons.
Similarly, exports to Europe also increased by 33 percent, reaching 22,640 tons. Meanwhile, exports to India declined by 11.4 percent from 30,651 tons in 2024 to 27,155 tons in 2025. In the eight months from March to October 2025,
Chile exported a total of 86,215 tonnes of walnuts, up 28.7 percent from the total shipment of 67,010 tonnes in the same months of 2024. Like India, walnut exports to Lithuania also declined.
