The SEO conversation is still stuck on rankings. But rankings were only ever a proxy for something else: visibility at the moment of decision. That proxy is breaking.

We’ve known the click distribution for years:
Top positions capture most of the traffic and everything else drops off fast.

But that assumes that users are choosing between links.

They’re not doing that as much anymore.

Now, the interface resolves the query before the user evaluates sources.
AI Overviews, answer boxes and generative responses have compressed the journey.

This creates a different kind of competition.

Now it is not important as to who ranks higher but whose content gets abstracted into the answer.

That’s where AEO and GEO surface.
Once you have made your impression, the source becomes optional. That’s the uncomfortable part.
You can be technically correct, well-written, even highly ranked,
and still be bypassed unless your content is structured in a way that systems can extract, combine and reuse.
