Govardhan Puja is an important festival for people who hail from the Braj region. It is celebrated on the Pratipada Tithi, Kartik Shukla Paksha (the first day during the waxing phase of the Moon in the month of Kartik). This festival is associated with Shri Krishna, the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. For the uninitiated, Shri Krishna triumphed over Lord Indra, who lashed the Braj region with torrential rain to avenge people after they decided to discontinue appeasement. Thus, Shri Krishna saved the people, the cattle and property from floods. Therefore, people pay tributes to him and the Govardhan parvat on this day. This year, Govardhan Puja will be performed today.
