: Parenteral nutrition typically does not include iodine. A new study of children on parenteral nutrition for >6 months found that one-third had hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency. Children for whom parenteral nutrition is their sole source of nutrition should undergo periodic monitoring of urinary iodine to identify iodine deficiency. If urinary iodine is low for age, we recommend measurement of serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (T4). http://bit.ly/13PhMKT
