Kummatty about a trickster who turns children into animals by sorcery received the National Award for the Best Children’s Film.

Widely remembered for its beautiful cinematography and magical realism, the film was restored by the FHF in 2021 and remains to be consider as one of the greatest films ever made.

We revisit the striking poster of a magical mask from the Malayalam film Kummatty (1979) directed by the cartoonist and filmmaker G. Aravindan. Based on the folklore of Kummatty, or the Bogeyman, the film weaves an enchanting tale in which mythic and real worlds meet to create a timeless fantasy fable about a life seamlessly intertwined with nature. The film was written by Aravindan and Kavalam Narayana Panicker with Ambalapuzha Ramunni playing the haunting figure of Kummatty.
