“Earlier today, I had the opportunity to meet our students from government schools who have successfully cleared the NEET examination and qualified for MBBS admissions. Despite their aspirations and dedicated efforts, they were unable to secure seats at Helen Lepcha Sikkim Medical College and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Sikkim. Through their dedication and perseverance, they have instead secured admission to private medical institutions in West Bengal and other states.
Coming from underprivileged backgrounds and remote areas, these young achievers deserve every opportunity to pursue their dreams. To support their aspirations, the State Government will extend the necessary assistance to enable them to continue their MBBS studies at institutions in West Bengal and other states.
We remain committed to empowering our youth and ensuring that every deserving student gets the opportunity to realise their dreams, pursue their aspirations, and build a bright and meaningful future.”

No More Referrals: Advanced Spinal Surgery Now Available at District Hospital Namchi

Namchi, 16 September (IPR) : The Orthopaedic Department of District Hospital Namchi (DHN) has successfully performed an advanced spinal surgery, marking another significant milestone in strengthening specialised surgical services at the district level.

A 23-year-old female patient with pr*****ed intervertebral disc (PIVD) at L4–L5 and disc herniation at L5–S1, associated with significant neurological deficits including foot drop and EHL power of 0/5, underwent Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) at the L5–S1 level.

The successful procedure demonstrates the growing capability of District Hospital Namchi to provide complex orthopaedic and spinal interventions locally, reducing the need for patients to be referred to tertiary centres outside the district.

Speaking about the achievement, Dr Kanchan Gurung Joint Replacement, Arthroscopic and Spine Surgeon District Hospital Namchi, stated that after successfully performing more than 1,000 joint replacement and arthroscopic surgeries at DHN, the department is now taking another step forward towards minimally invasive spinal (MIS) surgeries and, in the future, robotic-assisted surgery.

This achievement represents an important advancement in specialised healthcare services in Namchi District , bringing increasingly complex surgical care closer to patients and further strengthening District Hospital Namchi as a centre for advanced orthopaedic and spinal surgery.

Delighted to attend National Engineers’ Day celebration at Manan Kendra today 2026, where we commemorated the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Shri M. Visvesvaraya Ji, one of India’s greatest engineers and nation-builders.

I would like to acknowledge our senior and retired engineers. Your decades of service and contribution have played an important role in building Sikkim’s roads, bridges, buildings, water and power infrastructure, and in shaping the State’s development journey. We remain deeply grateful for your service and experience.

Our engineers are no longer confined to technical roles alone. Many are now contributing in administration, policy implementation and leadership. As we move towards our vision of a Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samartha Sikkim, your role will remain indispensable.

Since forming the Government, we have worked to provide greater recognition and opportunities to our engineering fraternity. Many engineers have been entrusted with responsibilities as Departmental Secretaries and Heads of Departments, while thousands of young engineers serving on a temporary basis have also been regularised.

I am happy to see our engineering fraternity coming together not only in their professional responsibilities but also through activities such as the Engineers’ Day Run, sports events and the Inter-Departmental Futsal Tournament. Such initiatives strengthen teamwork, camaraderie and a healthy work-life balance.

I urge our young engineers to learn from the experience of your seniors, embrace new technology, and continue to innovate. Remember, an engineer’s true contribution is measured not only by what they build, but by the positive impact their work creates in people’s lives.

Minister-cum-Area MLA Mr. Tshering T. Bhutia Inspects Landslide-Affected Rimbi/Singlitam and Attends Golden Jubilee Celebration Meeting at Govt. JHS Tathang.

Gyalshing, 15 September (IPR): Minister-cum-Area MLA Mr. Tshering T. Bhutia inspected the tragic landslide site at Rimbi/Singlitam and took stock of extensive damage caused to households, standing properties, and the road connecting Melli–Khechuperi–Yuksom. The landslide has resulted in the complete collapse of the road, severely affecting the lifeline connectivity of the area.

During the inspection, Mr.Bhutia assessed the impact of the landslide on the affected households and discussed immediate temporary measures to restore connectivity. He has been continuously monitoring the grievances arising from the landslide and expressed his deep concern over the difficulties faced by the affected families and the general public.

Minister was accompanied by Panchayat President Mr. Mangal Rai, ward Panchayat members, and members of the public. During the visit, he assured the major affected victims that they would receive necessary government support, including assistance for the construction of new houses on newly purchased land. He further assured that appropriate measures would be taken to address the situation and mitigate the hardships caused by the landslide.

Following the inspection, Minister Chaired a meeting regarding the upcoming Golden Jubilee Celebration of Government Junior High School (JHS), Tathang, held at Tathang.

The meeting commenced with a welcome address by Zilla Panchayat Member Miss Sabitri Rai. Thereafter, Mr. Prem Kumar Limboo, Headmaster of Tathang JHS, presented the agenda, aims and objectives of the proposed Golden Jubilee Celebration.

Panchayat President Mr. Deepak Rai placed before the gathering the details regarding the availability of initial funds collected during the previous meeting, the proposed fundraising procedures and the estimated total budget and financial requirements for the celebration.

The meeting then proceeded to an open discussion, during which the respective committees presented their ideas, procedures, and requirements. Detailed discussions were held particularly on the sports events, cultural programmes, ground maintenance, and stage arrangements. Minister also visited the celebration site and inspected the ground maintenance, overall quality of the site, and stage arrangements.

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Mon Rai, State-Level Joint Secretary Youth Wing, Mr. Gyalpo Lepcha, CLC Organisation Secretary, Panchayat President Mr. Deepak Rai, Panchayat President Mr. Mangal Rai of 11-Rimbi Timbrong GPU, Panchayat Members, Mr. Amal Singh Limboo, Sub-Inspector; and alumni of Tathang JHS.

Lachung Students and Youth Experience Delhi Through Operation Sadbhavana*

LACHUNG, SEP 15: Sixteen students and youth from Lachung, North Sikkim, undertook an Educational-cum-Motivational Tour to New Delhi from 08–15 September 2026 under Operation Sadbhavana of the Indian Army.

The highlight of the tour was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and interact with the Hon’ble President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During the interaction, the President asked the students about their aspirations, giving the youngsters a rare opportunity to speak openly about their dreams and ambitions.

The participants also interacted with the Director General, NCC, General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, NCC cadets from different parts of India attending the National Integration Camp, and senior scientists at DIPAS, DRDO. These interactions provided the youth valuable exposure to leadership, national integration, science and technology, and career opportunities.

The group visited iconic landmarks including the National War Memorial, India Gate, Raj Ghat, Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple and Air Force Museum, many of which the students had previously known only through their textbooks. Travelling by Delhi Metro and experiencing the city’s vibrant culture and shopping added to their memorable experience.

Sharing her experience, Ms Lhamu Bhutia, one of the participants, described meeting the Hon’ble President, interacting with senior Army officers and visiting iconic places as an unforgettable experience that she would cherish for a lifetime.

The team was flagged in at Kalimpong today by the General Officer Commanding, 27 Mountain Division, who interacted with the participants and listened to them share their experiences from the tour. The interaction provided an opportunity to appreciate the students’ learning and reflections from their visit to the national capital.

The tour not only provided an opportunity to explore New Delhi but also broadened horizons, built confidence and inspired the youth of Lachung to dream bigger, further strengthening the spirit of national integration and the bond between the Indian Army and the people of Lachung.

In a challenging Himalayan State like Sikkim, the contribution of our engineers is particularly significant. From roads, bridges and buildings to water, power, healthcare and other essential infrastructure, their expertise and dedication remain central to our development journey.

This year, Engineers’ Day in Sikkim has been marked by a series of activities, including the Engineers’ Day Run, inter-departmental futsal tournament, sports and fellowship programmes, alongside initiatives to recognise the valuable contributions of our senior and retired engineers.
