Senior journalist Sarikah Atreya was conferred the ‘Best Journalist in Sikkim Express’ Award for 2025–26 at the Ram Patro Memorial Award 2026 held in Gangtok. 🔥

The award was presented by Raj Kumari Thapa in the presence of Additional Political Secretary Tshering Wangchuk Lepcha, founder Mala Rana Patro, and editor Amit Patro.

Born in Singtam to noted senior journalist, writer, translator, and litterateur Subash Deepak and Late Shanti Devi, Sarikah was raised in an environment deeply rooted in literature and journalism. Inspired by her father’s legacy, she pursued a career in media and emerged as one of the prominent journalistic voices from the Eastern Himalayan region.

Throughout her career, she has been associated with several reputed media houses, including The Statesman, NOW!, The Hindu Business Line, and

In her address to the gathering, she said: “Journalism today looks very different from the world many of us entered decades ago. We came from an era of weekly newspapers, notebooks, fax machines, film rolls, and waiting for today’s national newspapers to arrive in Gangtok the next day. Today, stories travel instantly, and journalists are expected to report, post, react, record videos, and perhaps even smile for the algorithm.

For many of us from the print generation, the shift from thoughtful columns to 30-second reels has certainly been an education — and quite a ride.

But every era has its own energy, its own language, and its own strengths. And if journalism has taught me anything, it is the importance of adapting without losing your core values.”

The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Deorali, observed its Founder’s Day earlier today, marking the 103rd birth anniversary of its Founder President, His Highness Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal. 🔥

The event brought together dignitaries, scholars, students and well-wishers for a meaningful celebration of Sikkim’s cultural, spiritual and historical legacy.

Prince Gyalsey Palden Gyurmed Namgyal graced the occasion as the chief guest and spoke about NIT’s continuing role as a living centre for preserving the heritage of Sikkim and the wider Himalayan world. He highlighted the late Chogyal’s contributions as a moderniser, institution-builder and protector of Sikkimese identity, while also calling on the younger generation to reconnect with their roots in more engaging and accessible ways.

A major highlight of the day was the Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal Memorial Lecture delivered by eminent journalist, author and columnist Sunanda K. Datta-Ray. Drawing from his long association with the late Chogyal and his own historical observations, Datta-Ray reflected on Sikkim’s political and cultural journey, the Chogyal’s international outlook, and the importance of preserving historical memory with nuance and balance.

The event also saw an engaging Q&A session moderated by senior journalist Pema Wangchuk, along with the release of two publications — 50 Years of Buddhism in Sikkim: History, Culture and Challenges and A Guide to Holy Buddhist Sites in Sikkim. Datta-Ray was also presented with the Centennial Medal of Honour in recognition of his contributions to literature, journalism and historical discourse.

With thoughtful reflections, cultural remembrance and renewed conversations around Sikkim’s past and future, this year’s Founder’s Day served as a powerful reminder of the need to keep Sikkim’s heritage alive for generations to come.

Gangtok-based Rachna Books has published ‘A Kingdom Remembered: A Personal and Political History of Sikkim’ by writer and scholar Jackie Hiltz, marking a literary moment in the year Sikkim completes 50 years of statehood.

The book revisits one of the most defining and debated chapters in Sikkim’s history: the events leading up to 1975, when Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last king of Sikkim, was deposed and the 330-year-old Himalayan kingdom became the twenty-second state of India.

Written in accessible and engaging prose, A Kingdom Remembered is the result of Hiltz’s decades-long research across Sikkim and New Delhi. Through interviews with key participants, archival work, and journeys across the state, the book pieces together a layered political history that is both deeply personal and meticulously researched.

The publication comes at a meaningful time, as Sikkim reflects on five decades of its journey as an Indian state.

With this release, Rachna Books completes its “Sikkim History Trilogy,” adding an important new work to the growing body of literature on Sikkim.
