Social Media Marketing is a buzzword you’ve probably heard thousands of times by now. While I’ve seen the rise and fall of many different social Media networks over the past decade, I have not seen the effects of social media marketing decline one single bit. If your business is not actively engaged in social media marketing, and the social conversation as a whole, then you’re missing out on a huge portion of the marketplace. That’s dangerous.

1. Some Quick Stats

Facebook has 1.3 billion with a “B” ACTIVE users every month. Since it is estimated that there are over 7 billion people on the planet, that means that one in every seven people you meet is on Facebook. In more developed countries like the USA, the number is far higher. Saying “Everyone is on Facebook” when you’re speaking about the United States isn't really that big of a stretch at all anymore.
Twitter has 645 million active users. That’s more than double the population of the United States.
While actual numbers are very unclear - it’s safe to say that there are at least a few hundred million users on Google Plus.

2. Everything is “Social” Now that We Have Smart Phones

Even if you don’t want to be on social media as a business, it is highly likely that your customers are already doing some basic “marketing” for you. Hopefully it’s positive marketing! When a customer walks through your doors they can check into your location on Facebook and tell all their friends about the good or the bad experience they've had.

Rather than let your consumers manage that conversation without you, you should make sure that your page is up to date, and that you interact consistently. When someone leaves a positive review - thank them. If someone complains - offer to resolve their problems. When you do this, you not only get to build that relationship directly with your customer, but you’re also going to be in front of all their social media friends as well.

Facebook is just one example of where customers are talking about your business and the products and services in your industry. Twitter is a great place to search and see what people are talking about when it comes to your business and your competitors.

It doesn’t matter if we like it or not - social media and social media marketing affects our businesses every single day now. If you’re not fully engaged yet, now is the time to do so! Tackle it head on and take advantage of this amazing media channel that you have at your disposal.
3. How Can You Easily Engage in Social Media Marketing?

It’s important to remind yourself to start with something that you can handle. Don’t go out and think you’re going to master three or four social networks at once. Start with something simple like a page and then go from there.

Once you’re set up, you can use our free social media marketing guide to help you get on track, or you can hire someone to help you keep it up to date. One of your younger team members may find this to be easier for them, but I would still encourage you to stay involved and up to date with what they’re doing! Even if this is a new area for you, you can lead the way as the leader of your business!
