One hiring question I often ask founders:

Does this person want the job… or do they want the responsibility?

Most candidates want the job.

Very few want the responsibility.

Here’s the difference many growing businesses miss.

Skill helps people perform tasks.
Will helps people solve problems.

When you hire mainly for skill, you often get someone who:

• waits for instructions
• does only what is assigned
• stops when the task is done

But businesses don’t grow with task-doers.

They grow with people who take ownership.

People who say:

"Let me figure this out."

Not:

"Tell me what to do next."

Because the truth is simple:

Skill can be trained.
Ownership mindset is much harder to build.

So when you interview someone next time, ask yourself:

Do they want the job…
or the responsibility that comes with it?

Before blaming “Gen Z attitude,” let’s ask a harder question.
Did you define what success looks like in the first place?

In many growing businesses, performance is judged by:
• Who stays late
• Who skips breaks
• Who looks busy

But that’s not productivity.
That’s visibility management.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

When leaders don’t have clear KRAs, KPIs, and output standards, they start measuring presence.

And when you measure presence, you attract compliant employees — not capable ones.

Gen Z is not lazy.

They simply don’t equate loyalty with sitting late.

They want clarity:
What’s expected?
By when?
How is it measured?

If the result is achieved, does 7 PM matter?

If the result is missed, even 10 PM doesn’t save it.

This is where scaling businesses get stuck.

Revenue grows.
Team grows.
But performance evaluation stays emotional.

If you want innovation and ownership, stop monitoring minutes.

It’s about clarity.

When KRAs are not clearly defined, output cannot be clearly expected.

And then we say —
“Team serious nahi hai.”
Let’s be practical.
If a manager doesn’t know:
• What exact result is expected
• How it will be measured
• By when it must be achieved

How will performance improve?
