Ensuring Women’s Safety in Cab and Bike Services

Women’s safety in Guwahati and other cities has become a growing concern, especially when using ride-hailing services like Rapido and others. Many women have reported alarming incidents where drivers insist on canceling online bookings and taking rides offline, citing high commission charges. While this might seem like a small request, it raises serious safety risks. If a ride goes offline, it becomes untraceable, putting passengers—especially women—at risk of being taken to unknown locations with no way for the company or their loved ones to track them.

Another critical issue is the mismatch between the driver’s profile on the app and the actual person arriving for the ride. Cases have surfaced where a different individual shows up, which is both unethical and dangerous. Passengers must always verify the driver’s identity before starting the trip. If there’s a mismatch, they should immediately report it to the respective cab service.

On account of International Women's Day, let’s take action for safer public transportation. We urge all cab and bike services in Guwahati and beyond to address these concerns seriously. Strengthening safety measures, enforcing strict identity verification, and ensuring rides remain traceable should be top priorities. Women's safety is non-negotiable, and together, we must work to create a safer commuting experience for all.
