World Population Day July 11, 2022
In 1987, there were just over 5 billion people living on Earth. In 2017, there are 7.6 billion people living on Earth and by 2050, it is estimated that there will be 9.8 billion people living on Earth.
World population growth is slowing down due to declining fertility rates but it still remains high at 1% every year which means that in 2020 we’ll have an extra 2 million more people each day than we did.
The day is observed by highlighting the importance of family planning, gender equality, maternal health and other reproductive rights. It also seeks to encourage a sense of responsibility and awareness among couples, individuals and governments to make conscious decisions that would lead to better care for the environment.
