This gulf between the real and digital worlds prevents us from fully exploiting the volumes of information now available to us. Augmented reality, a set of technologies that superimposes digital data and images on physical objects and environments, is closing this gap.
By putting information directly into the context in which we’ll apply it, AR increases our ability to absorb and act on it.

For many brands, Augmented Reality (AR) might not find a place in their marketing mix but if we are to face the fact, brands that want to make a mark and stay ahead of time are already using AR technology in ways more than one. Reaching more customers in new, innovative and immersive ways.
Let’s face it, no one in this era wants mediocrity, we are not satisfied with basics, we all want an extravagant experience, something out of the box, something worth it.
So why stick to the basic communication methods when it comes to marketing?
When you can do so much more with all the new and available technologies present around us that are affordable and smart!

Today let’s take two brands, one that has leveled-up with AR and another that has not and lets compare between the two of them to find out what difference it makes to a brands popularity among its audience.

Compare and Contrast - Cadbury vs Amul

Cadbury has been using AR for various marketing campaigns for a long time now. They have come up with interactive AR games that can be played on scanning a code on the wrappers, AR games on big screens around busy places like shopping malls and stations. Recently their Valentine’s Day campaign was about sending secret messages to our loved ones through scanning a code, typing a message and sending a scan link to the significant other and on scanning any cadbury silk hoarding using the link, the particular message gets displayed. And the messages are a secret as the only person with the scan link can see the message.

This is how a brand goes out of their way to make it special for their customers. And perhaps the best way to get noticed. Cadbury had launched another campaign in London, where people were encouraged to catch virtual objects on a screen and the winner would get a free cadbury bar. This AR game was interactive and fun and guess what? Around 165000 people ended up playing it. And they got even famous on social media with 1.6 million views on Facebook and more than 3 million tweets. That’s the power of smart and strategic usage of technologies like AR.

On the other hand, Amul being one of the predominant fmcg companies in India loses the battle of being the best by a few brownie points. Even though Amul is technically better when it comes to quality of chocolate, Cadbury is still ranked the best in the Indian market. This is mainly because of their incompetent marketing strategy in comparison with the technological advancements around the world. They still focus on content and illustrations and probably think losing out on heritage will be bad, but in the world of metaverse and AI and AR and VR, it is becoming really important for brands to meet the expectations of their customers and to provide them a better, rather an immersive experience.
