Admiral Gorshkov

With India set to acquire the secondhand Russian aircraft carrier, Mohali-based Commander Trilochan Singh Trewn (retd) recalls his meeting the Late Admiral Sergey Gorshkov, after whom the battleship was named.

The then chief of the erstwhile USSR Navy visited Vishakhapatnam in late-60s, just when the Soviet-built submarines started arriving in India. The visiting Admiral stayed at the Palm Beach hotel, where Commander Trewn remembers the breakfast meeting with him.

The Admiral looked superb in his white naval jacket studded with about 87 medal strips. He was quick witted and jovial. He did not hesitate to order one raw coconut to be brought for him on the breakfast table. We were embarrassed, but he was not. Then milk with cornflakes was served to all. Just when this was done and without waiting for next course of eggs on toast, he suddenly wiped his face with a table napkin and got up saying: “Well gentlemen, let us go.” All 14 members sitting on table had no choice, but to get up mid-way in their breakfast and join him for the scheduled visit to submarines!

“I hope the aircraft carrier named after him (which will now be called INS Vikramaditya) is not as unpredictable as the Admiral, who died in 1988,” remarked Commander Trewn.

Video Games Can Enlarge Parts Of The Human Brain

We’re sure many of you who don’t play video games on a regular basis probably think it’s a waste of time, especially if you’re an adult. Although according to a recently published study, those hours you see your husband spending on the couch shooting random opponents in the face in Call of Duty: Ghosts is actually enlarging his brain. Researchers at Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the Charité University Medicine St. Hedwig-Krankenhaus asked volunteers to play Super Mario 64 for 30 minutes a day over two months. After scanning their brains through an MRI before and after the study, researchers found the volume of their brain increased in the right hippocampus, the right pre-frontal cortex and the cerebellum. These areas of the brain are known to be responsible for memory formation, muscle control, strategic planning and spatial navigation. As a result of this study, researchers are theorizing playing video games could actually be useful in treating brain disorders. “The presented video game training could therefore be used to counteract known risk factors for mental disease such as smaller hippocampus and prefrontal cortex volume in, for example, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and neurodegenerative disease,” researchers added to the study’s report.

Mars Orbiter raised further successfully

The second of the six orbit raising manouevres for the Mars Orbiter was completed successfully early Friday, the Indian space agency said.

According to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the second orbit raising manouevre that started 2.18 AM on Friday has been successfully completed.

The on-board motor of Mars Orbiter was fired for 570.6 seconds taking up the Mars Orbiter to 40,186 km apogee (farthest point to the Earth) from the earlier levels of 28,814 km.

On Thursday, ISRO completed the first orbit raising activity for Mars Orbiter. The commands for the activity are issued from Spacecraft Control Centre (SCC) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bangalore.

ISRO launched the Mars Orbiter in earth orbit Tuesday. The spacecraft was placed at an elliptical earth orbit with a perigee of 248.4 km and an apogee of 23,550 km, inclined at an angle of 19.27 degrees to the equator.

The 1,340-kg Mars Orbiter, developed by ISRO at an outlay of around Rs.150 crore, carries 852 kg of fuel on-board. Around 360 kg fuel was likely to be expended on the six orbit raising activities.

S-Walker Board Takes You Around Town On A Compact Deck With Two Wheels

Combining elements of the Segway, a skateboard and a balance board, the two-wheeled vehicle lets you get around town while perched on top a compact deck. Unlike motorized skateboards, it's meant strictly for solo mobility, so no fancy tricks to impress the girls -- everything is all about getting from one place to another without walking because nobody needs all that boring exercise.

The S-Walker Board uses a pair of small wheels set up side-by-side in the center of the deck, driven by a pair of 250W motors that draw power from a rechargeable lead-acid battery. When riding, you place your feet on the grip pads on either end of the deck, with steering accomplished by shifting your body weight. It can carry riders who weigh up to 176 pounds and send them moving at up to 6.2 mph, with the onboard gyro keeping everything in perfect balance. Range is rated at just a little over 12 miles, so you may want to use it sparingly if you want to keep using your ride throughout the day. Since it's very compact, though, you should be able to sneak it to work, school or the coffeeshop in the corner for replenishing on a wall outlet.

WORLD VIEW: OUTER SPACE BALLOON CAPSULE RIDE

If you’re looking to make your dreams of flying high above Earth a reality, the folks at World View are just the people you want to talk to. The Tuscon, Arizona based company will allow people to soar 20 miles above the ground from the comforts of a balloon capsule.

Okay so technically it’s still 70 miles away from outer-space, but that doesn’t make this ride any less awesome. By 2016, World View plans on letting 8 passengers take a 4 hour round trip into “space.” The travel capsule will ascend for about 1-1/2 hours before reaching its desired height, and will then slowly descend back to Earth giving riders breathtaking views on both ends of the spectrum. While this experience sounds great, it will cost you. How much you ask? Try $75,000. Watch the video here: http://vimeo.com/76082638
