One chance discovery in Dalhousie became the floor of an entire room.

While working on the Calcutta Bungalow project, Swarup Dutta and Iftekhar Ahsan stumbled upon a small marble engraving workshop hidden in the streets of Dalhousie.

Inside, they found stacks of surplus marble plaques.

Names.

Addresses.

Fragments of stories.

Pieces that had been discarded, forgotten, or left unused.

Most people would have walked past them.

They saw an opportunity to preserve a piece of Kolkata.

Instead of letting those marble engravings disappear, they brought them together.

Hundreds of plaques.

Hundreds of stories.

Stitched into a single collage.

And transformed into the floor of a room inside Calcutta Bungalow.

But that was always the vision.

Calcutta Bungalow was never meant to be just a place to stay.

It was meant to be a way to experience Kolkata.

A city woven into every corner.

From rooms inspired by neighbourhoods like **Boi Para** and **College Street**, to objects sourced from the streets themselves, every detail was designed to carry the soul of the city.

Because the best heritage experiences aren't created from scratch.

They're assembled from the stories a city leaves behind.

The forgotten era of Trincas
Long before Park Street became legendary, Trincas was already shaping a generation.

In this reel, Mr. D.K. Jaiswal recalls a fascinating chapter from 1950s Kolkata, when boys from St. Xavier’s and girls from Loreto would gather at Trincas for ballroom dancing sessions organized by Peter Dey.

This was where young Calcuttans learned more than just dance steps.

They learned confidence.
They learned etiquette.
They learned how to carry themselves with grace.

All under the watchful eyes of parents and teachers.

Years later, Trincas would become home to iconic performers like Pam Crain and Braz Gonsalves, helping transform Park Street into the entertainment capital of India and the rest is history.

The golden era of Indian cinema.

In this reel, D.K. Jaiswal takes us back to the golden era of Kolkata’s cinema culture through the remarkable story of Hind Cinema.

Established in 1947 by the Jaiswal family, Hind Cinema wasn’t just another movie theatre.

It became a landmark.

He also remembers a time in the 60s when the dress circle cost just around Rs.3 which was quite expensive for back then.

A place where generations watched classics, where premieres became celebrations, and where legends like Dev Anand, Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Mahmood, and countless others walked through its doors.

There was a time when only a handful of films released each year.

Popular studios and producers, even from South India, would wait for an available slot at Hind Cinema because releasing there meant prestige.

Today, the theatre has evolved into an INOX multiplex, but its legacy continues to live on as one of Kolkata’s most iconic cinematic institutions.
