4 Simple Steps to Increase Your Productivity
All of us want to be more productive—to get more done in less time, with fewer resources and on less sleep. This article will walk you through four simple steps that can help you achieve higher levels of productivity, so you can get back to the things that are most important to you!
1) Write Down Your Goals
Set some concrete goals that you want to achieve in your life. For example, if you want to become more productive, write down increase my productivity as a goal and list ways that you can achieve it. Put these goals somewhere where you'll see them every day – on your computer desktop, bathroom mirror or fridge. Make them public and share them with friends and family so that there's accountability involved in meeting these goals. This way, whenever you feel unmotivated or lethargic about accomplishing something, you'll have these goals there to remind yourself of what it is that really matters in life.
2) Prioritise your goals
Break down your goals into smaller steps, so you can focus on executing them. Break those steps down further until they’re manageable actions that are attainable in short periods of time. For example, instead of thinking I want to start a business, think I want to create an initial plan for my business by next week. A huge part of accomplishing big goals is breaking them down into little actions you can accomplish every day. The most effective people focus on getting things done—not debating about why they haven’t been done yet.
3) Break them down
Don't bite off more than you can chew, is one of those grandpa-isms we've all heard a million times. But it's also sound advice for getting stuff done. If your goals are too big, you won't have time to do anything but dream about them. So take them down a notch and make them smaller—the word smaller makes it sound easier and less intimidating, which is good since goal setting can be tough work. Break your goal into parts until it feels manageable enough to tackle without giving yourself an ulcer in the process. Doing so will help keep you focused on what needs doing right now—as opposed to wondering when or if things will get done at all, which is where most people go wrong with productivity planning!
4) Become accountable
If you want to be productive, you need someone you trust and respect who's going to keep you honest. Ideally, that's a manager or direct report. This person doesn't need much power—just a calendar reminder now and then will do. Being accountable to someone will make sure that you follow through on your commitments, no matter how much work is on your plate right now. It may even prevent emergencies down the road!
