Payments look like a solved problem until they fail, and payment failures are silent. A missed webhook, a double charge, a subscription that stops renewing with no error surfaced to anyone.
We put together the eight payment API risks SaaS founders most often miss, spanning security, architecture and provider choice, with what to do about each.

"Secure payment integration" gets said a lot. It usually means nothing specific.
I broke it into the six controls that actually matter for a fintech MVP: keeping card data off your servers, verifying webhooks, idempotency, secrets handling, data residency, and a log you can defend in an audit.
Plus which ones to build now and which can wait, because MVP budgets are real.

If you are building payments into a product right now, read it before you write the first webhook handler. Questions, drop them in the comments or message me.

What "secure" actually means when building payment APIs for a fintech MVP. Six controls, which to build now, which can wait, and how to judge a partner on it.

Something I tell prospects more often than you'd expect: you don't need me.
If your product has a single checkout and payments are one normal feature of a normal app, a good general development agency will build it fine. Hiring a payments specialist for that is overkill, and any specialist who tells you otherwise is selling.
Where it changes is when payments stop being a feature and become the foundation. Subscriptions. Marketplace splits. Invoicing that has to satisfy a tax authority. Money moving between three systems that all need to agree.
Then the thing that hurts you isn't difficulty, it's silence. A webhook that never arrives throws no error. A subscription that quietly stops renewing looks identical to a customer who lost interest. Teams who haven't been burned by that build the happy path and ship.
So the useful question isn't specialist or generalist. It's: what happens if this breaks silently for a month, and does anyone here know how to stop that?

If you've made this call before, which way did you go, and would you do it again?
