'Innovation has kept us relevant for 45 years', says Deepak Jalan, Managing Director of Kolkata-based Linc Pen & Plastics, a company founded by his father Suraj Mal Jalan in 1976. According to Deepak, no matter how much we digitalize, pen and paper will never go out of fashion. The company also manufactures an array of stationery items including markers, geometry boxes, pencils, and erasers.

In around 1970s, there weren’t too many options except fountain pens and ballpoint pens. Suraj Mal wanted to make affordable pens. Suraj Mal invested a few thousand rupees of his savings and launched the first Linc ball pen for Rs 2 from a small manufacturing facility in Kolkata. The brand also launched the Linc Ocean Gel Pen at Rs 5, which, according to Suraj Mal’s son Deepak Jalan, was the first gel pen to be sold at such a low price.

According to Deepak, Linc has a market share of 10 percent in the Indian writing instrument market. Cello, Lexi, and Reynolds have a major share in this market, while Flair, Rotomac, Stic, Luxor, and Montex are other recognized brands.

As Linc steps into its 45th year, its products are available in 1.5 lakh retail stores throughout the country, while exports reach 40 countries. Subsidiary brands Bensia, Deli, Pentonic, Markline, and others also have a market presence.

'The vision of our founder was to make India self-reliant and also contribute to the cause of nation-building and mobility in those times,' says Chandra Kant Birla, Chairman, CK Birla Group, of which National Engineering Industries (NEI) is a part.

In 1946, when India was beginning to find its footing across the world as a free nation, industrialist BM Birla was way ahead thinking of making this country self-reliant in the industrial manufacturing sector. In a bid to make an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat,’ BM Birla started a bearing-manufacturing company called the National Bearing Company Limited (NBC) in 1946.

NBC — which was later changed to National Engineering Industries (NEI) — was started with an initial investment of Rs 80 lakh, with a sole production unit in Jaipur. In 1950, the company began with manufacturing 30,000 cylindrical roller bearings, which it supplied to the Indian Railways as well.

Over the years, NEI has become a global bearing manufacturer and exporter out of India. At present, it manufactures about 20 crore bearings in 1,450 sizes in a year from five manufacturing units spread across Jaipur, Gujarat, and Haryana. In fact, the production facility in Newai, Jaipur, was started as an all-women unit in 1980.

The company also exports to 30 countries, including Germany, South Africa, Japan, and China. It claims to report 20 percent of its revenue from its export business. Recently, NEI acquired Slovakia-based Kinex Bearings — a water pump and industrial bearings manufacturer.

Cables and wires and electrical products company Polycab was started in 1983 by Inder Jaisinghani and his brothers, who took over their late father’s hardware and electrical store.

The Jaisinghani family, who are Sindhis, ran Sind Electric Stores, a small hardware and electrical store in Mumbai, which sold fans, lights, switches, and wires.

Inder Jaisinghani was 15 years old when his father, Thakurdas Jaisinghani, passed away. It could not have been easy for his mother to ask Inder to quit his studies and take over the family business started by his father.

Fortunately for young Inder, he was not alone when he took over the business. His older brothers Girdhari and Ajay, and his younger brother Ramesh teamed up to scale up the family business and take their father’s legacy forward. Initially, Inder and his brothers ran the store and experimented with making wires and cables in Mumbai.

But their real success story began in 1983 when they started a firm named Polycab to manufacture electrical goods at a large scale in Gujarat.

Being an ardent handloom lover, Hetal Desai did not think highly of the readymade outfits available in the market. Her daughter, Lekhinee Desai, says that as a child, her mother always bought material and stitched beautiful dresses for her sister and her. 'My mom has great design aesthetics and a natural eye for silhouettes and fabrics. So I nudged her to do something about her talent. We started with an initial investment of Rs 50,000' says Lekhinee.

Hetal and Lekhinee visited a handloom exhibition in 2016 for a shopping spree and came back with an exciting business idea and 50 metres of fabric with the ajrakh print. They got the fabric stitched into kurtis in various sizes and designs by their neighbourhood tailor. Lekhinee created a page, posted a few pictures of the completed outfits, and distributed the link among her friend circle. And thus began the journey of The Indian Ethnic Co.

Started as a passion project from a family home, it now has three busy offices and ships products worldwide.

Sunil Srinivasan Chari and Edward Walter Menezes started Rossari Biotech in Mumbai to manufacture speciality chemicals for textiles. Formed in 2003 as a partnership firm titled Rossari Labtech, the company now is a leading speciality chemicals manufacturer, and in 2020 the company went for an IPO.

Having worked in textile processing, dyestuff, and speciality chemicals industries, it was natural for friends Sunil Srinivasan Chari and Edward Walter Menezes to start their own business in the same sector. The budding entrepreneurs were looking to start a business supplying Indian speciality chemicals that met the needs of local industries. The seeds of the idea were sown back in 1997, and the duo formally incorporated the business in 2003 under the name Rossari Labtech.

'Our first investment was the acquisition of a 10-acre plot of land in Silvassa for manufacturing purposes. Later, in 2009, we renamed it Rossari Biotech Limited and began sustained efforts in product innovation, process improvement, and custom solutions in the speciality chemicals industry,' says Sunil, who is the MD at Rossari.

Since then, the friends-turned-cofounders have grown Rossari into a large, Made-in-India speciality chemicals manufacturer. From textile chemicals, this Mumbai-based company has diversified into chemicals for the home, personal care, animal health, and nutrition segments.

Coimbatore-based water pump manufacturing company EKKI Group started its journey in 1981 as a small unit with nine workers. Today, its growth story has made its way into the curriculum of INSEAD’s MBA programme.

In 1981, P Arumugam, along with his uncle KK Veluchamy, and their friend, MS Sundaram, launched Deccan Pumps, which manufactured submersible pumps for farmers. Gradually, the small group diversified into manufacturing other products such as jet pumps, submersible motors, centrifugal monoblocs, borehole submersibles etc.

The company underwent several changes as Arumugam acquired the group completely and became the sole owner, which paved the way for a larger holdings company called EKKI Group, which comprises four companies: Deccan Pumps, Deccan Enterprises, EKKI HOMA and EKKI Pumps. Today, the company is handled completely by Arumugam and his son, Kanishka Arumugam, who affirms that EKKI has evolved from being just a pump manufacturer to a water technology company.

After being in the pump manufacturing business for long, Kanishka shares that EKKI is determined to pivot towards providing clean drinking water and sanitation. Urbanisation, water scarcity, energy shortages, globalisation, increased digitisation, and climate change are key drivers for this. He believes it is time that the pumps are made not just efficient but also intelligent as the water industry transforms.

The company set up a joint venture (JV) with German watertech giant HOMA Pumpenfabrik GmbH, called EKKI HOMA in 2018. The JV aims to bring waste-water system solutions to India. HOMA set up a plant with EKKI in 2019 to specifically manufacture waste-water pumps. Kanishka says that this collaboration combines 'Indian engineering capabilities with German technology'.

The company’s sustainable water solution efforts also gained global attention when INSEAD Business School incorporated the pump and water technology provider’s story in its MBA curriculum.

The company currently services sectors like agriculture, domestic and commercial building spaces, public utilities and more. All components for manufacturing the pumps are manufactured in-house.
